My DS has some white patches on the inside of both of his cheecks.I just noticed them earlier today but thought it was just milk. They are obviously still there now so I plan on calling the dr in the morning. Is there anything they will even do for him? Anything I can do?
Re: Thrush?
DD had thrust 3 times, so this is what I can tell you....
Gentian Violet is useless and messy. It has been around for forever. I mean, this is what our grandmas used, but fungi has adapted and it is rarely effective for modern strains of thrush.
This is a yeast infection in his mouth, so in order to really get rid of it, switch to sposies if you use cloth. Sanitize any bibs, burp cloths, toys, pacis and bottles that LO touches to kill the yeast and prevent reinfection.
Nystatin didn;t work for us. If your Pedi will go for it, request the generic for Diflucan, it will knock it right out and is a once daily deal. It treats the problem systematically and not just topically.
Also, request a prescription for topical nystatin ointment. Often, Thrush travels down through LO's system and results in a diaper rash that Desitin just can;t fix because it is really a yeast infection. Also, if you breastfeed, you can use this on yourself to prevent thrust in your breast (and if it gets to you, it likely ends in a yeast infection.)
Also, if you call in and say "My baby has thrush, will you call in a prescription for X?" most docs will. I have never gone into the doc for thrush, it is one of those really obvious things and docs tend to trust their patients on this one.
This for us also.
