Retail mama's to be

I am just wondering if there are any other full time retail mom's to be?

I run a fairly large store and I am finding these 8-12 hour shifts are just killing me! Being on my feet most of the day running around is finally starting to put its toll on my body.
Does anybody have any tips as to what they are doing to make it more bareable?

I wish it were easier to just sit in the office and do paper work but unfortunately most of the work is on the floor.
My doctor is saying at this point with the strain on my back, if I don't find a way to get off my feet more or figure something out that takes the stress off my body I will be going off a lot earlier than I would like.

How are you finding working on your feet all day? Any coping mechanisms?

  • I don't work in retail, but I do work as a General Manager of a restaurant.  12 hour+ days are my norm.  This is my second pregnancy.  Believe it or not... shoes are the first thing you need to try.  I highly recommend Dansko or Sanitas.  They're going to run you $100, but believe me when I tell you they will be your best friend.  Read on Dansko's website how the slight incline on their heel takes so much strain off of you.  From one crazy hour worker to another, invest.  GL!

  • I totally agree with SHOES!   That is what I was thinking as I read your post.  Last pregnancy I got a good pair of Clarke's and they made such a big difference.  They will also cost you quite a bit, but they were worth it.  Later in my pregnancy, when I did get ten minutes to sit, I had a second chair that I could put my feet up on to try and help.   I was on my feet working until the day I went into the hospital.

im an asm at a big retail store and work 40 hours a week, 8+ hours a day, always on my feet. i had to give up the nice shoes and do comfy ones for the sake of my feet and back. i went to the week i delivered with my first and it was so hard, but rest when you can, stay hydrated, eat healthy, keep snacks, and keep in mind everyone will understand if you need a little break. my manager worked while preg with twins and went into pre-term labor from doing wayyyy too much. i go in early to sit and get the paperwork done and plan my day, it helps so i dont feel so rushed when we open. good luck!!!! its hard but you can do it!

  • I manage a retail store.  So I completely understand the running around and being exhausted. My feet have been so swollen the last couple weeks after getting home from those 8-12 hour shifts that you were talking about.  Honestly I haven't really changed up my routine at work or done anything differently since being pregnant, it really isn't an option for me unfortunately.  Is there anyway you could maybe take more frequent small breaks to give your body a rest for ten or fifteen minutes?  I do have one pair of shoes that are so comfy that I literally wear almost every day, luckily they match with almost everything. Make sure you are drinking PLENTY of water as well, that has seemed  to help me as well.  Good Luck!

  • Thanks for the responses ladies!
I have asics for shoes right now and those seem to help.

Retail can be fun until your pregnant! haha. In the same boat as you ttyson2808 where I don't have much of an option to change up my routine. I trouble shoot stores and the store I am in right now is closing in March. They decided with me running it they will not hire an assistant. Hmm

Good luck to you all ladies! and thanks again for the advice! I noticed most posts are saying water too and I think that may be the key I am missing

  • I don't work in retail, but I'm a medical resident and I also have to stand on my feet for hours on end. What the previous poster said about investing in a good pair of shoes is true - Danskos really are worth it! Another thing I would suggest though is compression hose and back support.  I was coming home literally unable to walk straight upright due to the pain before I got those two additional items. Just came off of a 24 hr shift last night and wow did that make the difference! I can still walk like a semi-normal person!!  I found my hose from a medical supply store (or you can buy over the Internet) and my maternity belt at Motherhood Maternity.
