What do you moms think? Sorry so long....

My baby boy is sick, and I'm just wondering what you ladies think. He started with a fever yesterday (ranging from 99-103), which tylenol helped. He is generally cranky, won't stop moaning and just wants to be held and cuddled all the time - which I am more than willing to do. He has 2 bottom teeth, the second one just came through about a week ago. But it seems like teething symptoms - he is drooling more than I have ever seen him drool. I thought I saw a lot before, but that was nothing compared to this. He is soaking himself and me, and basically anything he comes into contact with. He was eating yesterday, has wet diapers, and pooped yesterday morning (he's been having some constipation problems over the past couple of weeks though). Called the doc yesterday and they said we are doing everything we can and he did not need to be seen.

He barely slept last night, was up pretty much every hour moaning, and would only go back to sleep on me. He was not interested in his bottle this morning. He went to sleep at 8am while being held, wakes up when put down but right back to sleep when held.

Do you think its teething? I feel like we think EVERYTHING is teething! But the drool has me thinking it...but I guess my main question is can he still have these teething problems even tho the teeth broke through? Or could it be the next tooth/teeth giving him problems? His tops gums show no signs of teeth whatsoever. And at what point do I call the dr again, if he continues to refuse his bottle? His temp is definitely down today (around 98-99) with no tylenol and his diapers have been wet, so far.

  • Poor baby! And poor mommy!

Ellie doesn't have any teeth, so I don't have first hand experience with this yet (although I think her bottom two are working on it...) I'm not sure if what he's experiencing is because of oncoming teeth or the existing teeth. I'm not much help there.

Because you said his temp was down, it makes me feel like if I were you, I would wait it out. I would see how he does tonight with sleeping and check his temp tomorrow. Just continue the loving today. Maybe still give him some tylenol just to make him more comfortable?

Sorry you're going through this! GL!

  • All I know is that the top teeth must be alot worse b/c DS was miserable until the were about 1/3 the way out. Way worse than when his bottom ones came in.

  • Sounds like teeth to me. Baby girl has her third tooth coming in and it has been various degrees of hell for weeks and weeks now. Drooling, fevers, incessan chewing in everything, throwing up, not sleeping not eating.

I bought the hylands teething tablets and orajel which seem to help when it is really bad.

  • My DS just busted through his 6th tooth (on top) and it was just like what you said. He slept about 3 hours a night only after the teething tablets. Tylenol helped some but the only way he stopped fussing was to wrap an ice cube up in a towel and let him chomp through it.

    Hang in there!

  • Haven't bumped much recently, but I thought I would chime in...

If your doc approves it, baby iboprofen works sooo much better than tylenol. We have used both and usually within 15 mins of giving the dose LO stops crying. You can't give the meds as much (every 6-8 hrs instead of every 3), but you don't need to. We use baby advil

  • Does his crying get worse when you lay him down? Could be an ear infection. Very similar symptoms to teething. I think teeth come in two at a time (roughly) so it could be either :(

  • Sounds like teeth to me. The temp range you mentioned (99-103) sounds teething-like. If it were higher, I'd think maybe something else. I think sometime teeth can take a while to come in, which means they can be miserable for a while and we just feel like we're blaming everything on teething. If the temp goes higher or you notice LO seems off, then I'd worry. But what you're describing does sound like teeth to me. GL!
