Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone else having trouble with...

LO putting everything into his/her mouth? I try to keep the house pretty clean for this exact reason, but three times in the past few days, we've noticed DS chewing and found little things in his mouth. Carpet fiber, little piece of styrofoam (where the heck did he find THAT?), random things. We try to watch him obviously, but he is fast! Anyone else having this problem?

DS is currently chewing on something that he has tucked in his cheek. I want to sweep it out with my finger, but every time I try - and trust me, I've tried several times now - he clamps his mouth shut. He's surprisingly strong (and stubborn!) when he wants to be. Argh!

  • lol...yep......caught DD eating a Japanese beetle......ewww gross.  I usually can get her to open up by pretending to givr her a paci.  We have a rule that u must take off your shoes in the living room....because thats where she spends a lot of time on the carpet. But stll she will find the smallest fiber, hair or piece of lint.  I try to vacuum in there daily.

Yes, luckily my LO is all gums (well he just got one tooth a few weeks ago). That's how they learn. I thought he would stop by now but he still does it. I try tell him 'No mouth' for toys that aren't his or things he shouldn't be putting in his mouth, but mostly I am just keeping things out of his reach and pulling the little fluffs and foofs out of his mouth that he always find (even right after we vacuum).

OH MY GOODNESS... YES! My Hadley is the WORST you've ever seen for putting anything and everything in her mouth. I asked this on my BMB and got flamed b/c I was an idiot and didn't realize that babies do this... but it's not that! I'm telling you, she eats everything!! She doesn't just put things in her mouth exploring, she EATS everything. She eats fuzz, LOVES to eat paper, rips shreds off of a sock or anything else she can get her hands on and eats that too! She eats dirt, grass... we literally have to keep her paci in at all times if we are not right on top of her b/c she will have something in her mouth before you realize it's happening!

I keep thinking it will get better, but it's not! I don't know any solution.... but I have gotten so good at sweeping her mouth it's almost funny, I bet I do it 10-15 times a day.

This is my LO. He didn't like the beach until he discovered that he could eat sand. Just today we pulled a dust bunny (I swear we just swept two days ago) and paper circles from the hole puncher out of his mouth.

He doesn't take the paci, but I was looking at a friends baby and her LO has the paci in most of the time and doesn't put stuff in her mouth as much.

  • Glad it's not just us! These babies are so funny. I hope this stage doesn't last too long though. I'm always checking his mouth these days to make sure there's nothing in there!

  • DD does this all.the.time.  I have found string, carpet fuzz, dirt, old food, (the scariest) a splinter of wood that came in on someone's shoes because we had a new deck built.  Thank goodness for DD#1 cause she helps to point it out if I miss it.  For the pp who said that she got flamed for it, I am sorry for that!  Those people really must not understand.  I can honestly say that my older daughter never put anything in her mouth when she was younger and it wasn't because I was more attentive since she was the only one.  She had no desire, whatsoever.  When DD#2 started doing this, it completely threw me for a loop.
