So between reading books, consulting mommy friends, pedi and MIL I have been told the following foods should be off limits until a year old:
Cows milk, dairy products from cow's milk, nuts, peanut butter, strawberries, Eggs, hot dogs and grapes (the two latter because of choking hazards).
However I read posts where it's common to feed your babies these things. Especially with the BLW. I'm confused on what I should/shouldn't do.
Enlighten me!
Re: Set me straight
DS has had dairy products, I don't think cow milk is supposed to be introduced until a year or close too.
Peanuts and eggs are supposed to be introduced later but I'm pretty sure it's before a year? DS has had both.
I have also given hot dogs and grapes.. cut into fourths so it's about the size of a pea.
Our pedi told us at 6 months that LO can pretty much eat what we are eating. I asked about strawberries & peanut butter. She said any berry was fine & didn't recommend peanut butter due to the "thickness" as a choking not because it was a peanut product. She also suggested holding off on actual nuts due to choking hazard.
I didn't ask specifically about whole cow's milk because I know that is introduced around 1 year(or it was with my 2 yr old nephews).
I also give cheese & yogurt & eggs because pedi didn't single them out as something I should hold off on, but she didn't mention them individually.
I'd ask your pedi's advice & see what they have to say.
Baby Boy #2 is on the way!
Everything is fine except if there is a history of allergies in your family. If you want to try peanut butter smear it really thin on some toast, that way it isn't thick and it gives just a bit of a flavor.
Choking foods such as grapes should be sliced up to give it a different shape. Nuts are a no-go for choking, not allergies.
Here's what I've heard (from a nutritionist, and backed up by our Dr.): the "no strawberries" rule is outdated and they are fine. My LO loves strawberries! Eggs are fine but if you are concerned you can try just the yolks (the allergen is the protein, which is in the whites, not the yolk). Dairy is also fine at this age (if LO is on regular formula, they are getting cow's milk protein already). Cow's milk isn't recommended because it might interfere with the amount of BM/formula baby is taking, and as PP said, that is the most important thing for them to be having
What to feed your baby is such a personal choice! Go with what you feel is right, and I'm sure LO will be fine either way!
Dairy products are fine. No cows milk yet because they need the nutrients from formula/bm and milk tends to replace those
Nut products are fine. Whole nuts are a choking hazard and should be avoided until age 3
Eggs are fine
Grapes are fine. Cut them in half
Hot dogs should be cut lengthwise. I wouldn't feed hotdogs. Way high in sodium and nitrates
Strawberries are fine
They recently changed the allergy recs and don't have people holding off any more unless certain allergies run in your family

LO has had eggs (hard boiled and scrambled), yogurt, cheese, peanut butter (in small quantities or else it would present a choking hazard), hot dogs (casing off and cut into small pieces, some hot dogs are actually OK if you buy the good kind), and strawberries. It all depends on how prevalent food allergies are in your family. Odds are if your doctor hasn't expressed concern you are OK to go ahead with most foods. Mine said no milk by itself to drink, no raw honey, and no circular foods/choke hazards (hot dogs not cut, as mentioned)
I think grapes would be fine-- if I were to give them to LO I would skin them and cut them in half.
