2mo DS suddenly painfully gassy/fussy :(

My DS is almost 11 weeks old. Around 4 weeks, we were diagnosed with thrush, him orally and me ductally (he is 90% breast fed). Fortunately, with the help of Nystatin, he was able to get rid of it rather quickly. It took me a lot longer but I have finally been on the up and up the last week or so.

For a few weeks, he has been rather gassy (which can happen in babies with thrush), but no pains or fussiness. I would do tummy massages, leg kicks, gripe water, simethicone... and he would rip em like a man and have bowel movements with no problems!

The last week, however, has been a different story.

He screams in pain from the gas bubbles (which I can hear and feel) in his belly and he absolutely struggles to have a BM. He used to be able to have a BM any which way... lying down, standing on his head, you name it! Now, he only has luck when he is sitting up right, preferably in his bouncy seat, and even then it's a struggle. His stools are still very loose, not diarrhea loose, but the typical breast fed baby BM. I am still using the remedies that I had been using, but they no longer seem to produce the same effects. He (and my family) are absolutely miserable! I hate hearing him scream in pain, realizing that there isn't much I can do to help him.

Any ideas as to what could be the culprit all of a sudden? We saw a few doctors this week, including his family doctor for his 2 month appointment and another GP and LC at the breast feeding clinic we attended to get treated for the thrush. His family doctor said that it's typical for babies to be gassy and just suggested leg movements. The LC thought maybe its his stuffy nose causing some intestinal troubles. The GP said the planets could just be aligned properly. The only thing that I ate this week that I typically DON'T eat was green peas... not sure if those could affect him. I ate it for a few nights in a row (left overs) so if that's what it was, then today or tomorrow I should see a difference.

Also, at the 2mo appointment, he got 3 shots, one of which was a combination shot. He hasn't been quite the same since but I don't know if I should attribute the gassiness and pains to that. He's still eating like a CHAMP (although pulls off the nipples screaming due to gas pains some times)! He was 16lbs 6oz at his 2mo check up (9lbs 6oz at birth). He's a big boy, lol.

Any suggestions as to what else I could try to help my LOs pains and distress? Could it be constipation even though his stools are NOT hard?

Just looking for a little bit of direction... thanks!

I have learned that gas pains for tooting and burping are different in the way that you relieve it.  For the tooting gas patting on the back doesn't work.  I was shown to put the baby's back against your chest and pull her/his knees to his/her chest--gently.  I have done this for DD a few times lately b/c she has had gas that would not be relieved any other way I would try.  It does seem to work.  It is hard to hear them cry like that and be in pain.  Good Luck and I hope you find something that gives him and you peace.

  • google "colic holds for baby."  I swear it helps so much.  Basically you carry them like a football and the pressure on their tummy helps move the gas along.  My first baby was colicky and it helped a little but this baby is just gassy and it's helped a lot.  GL!  They usually grow out of it anywhere between 3-4 months as their systems mature.  Hang in there!

  • My son is 9 weeks and he hasn't been the same since his shots really either. I've been supplementing with Enfamil Gentlease and it's been helping a lot (he won't drink it straight b/c it's too thick) Also, my doctor approved 1 oz of apple juice watered down to help with constipation. My sons stools would be soft but his belly would be hard for days with no stools. After the apple juice, it helped him pass along the gas. Good Luck!

Do you have any colostrum frozen?  I've heard it helps with constipation.
