DS is almost 6 weeks old. I feel like I produce just enough milk for him. I pump twice a day...once in the morning and once at night. Pretty soon I will be returning to school and work. I do not want to supplement with formula. And feel like I need a boost in supply. I do not have much of a stash so I have some questions.
1. How often should I be pumping?
2. How soon after nursing should I pump?
3. If pumping and I do not get much should I continue the pumping session? Will it help boost my supply even if I'm not getting any during that pumping session?
4. Any other tips on what to do to increase supply?
Thank you ladies in advance. I have 2 other children but wasn't concerned with pumping because I got more time at home!!!
Re: Breastfeeding and pumping questions.
I'm not sure when you're returning to work but if you're trying to build a stash, I would start now. It's not a bad thing to have some extra in the freezer. It took me about 3-4 weeks with just pumping once after her morning feed to get 47 ounces. I wish I was pumping and stashing the entire time I was on maternity leave.
I usually pumped about an hour after her morning feed. Sometimes I would just feed her on one side and pump the other. Most of the time I would pump for at least 25-30 minutes to get multiple let downs. Sometimes it would take longer to start getting the milk so the longer pumping sessions worked for me.
I eat oatmeal every morning, I find that on the days I don't eat oatmeal my supply is less.
Yes I plan on it!
Right now you're probably pumping between/after feedings. Don't forget, when you go back to work you'll be pumping to replace feedings and you'll get a lot more. Chances are you won't need to use your freezer stash at all because you'll pump one day and use that the next.
