Soda

So, I never used to drink soda (pop-whatever you call it) before getting pregnant...

When I was pregnant I wanted it like crazy, but only root beer... two years later I still love the stuff.

But I'm trying to cut it out of my diet as I drink a can of it a day, and that's a lot of calories I don't need (and I don't like the diet).

I've tried putting flavor in my water and that doesn't help... I still want root beer!

How did you stop drinking soda if you drank it often?

I keep telling myself that at least it's only a can a day...It can be a lot worse I know.

Re: Soda

  • I only drink sugar free myself, when I do drink it. I figured out it was the fizz I wanted. I mostly drink Perrier now, all the fizz I want! I like the lime flavour on ice, and a lime wedge if we have it, if not, I can deal. But I don't crave pop anymore.

I used to be sooooo addicted to pop! Like NEVER DRANK ANYTHING ELSE sort of addicted. When I got pregnant I tried to just drink sprite and sometimes rootbeer instead of regular coke.

Recently I went on a big health kick because I was a slug and hated how I looked in clothes. To kick the habit I found other drinks that I liked just as much but weren't as bad for me. Green tea seemed to do the trick! I love love love it and now prefer it. I went cold turkey and it was hard but now months later I treat myself to a few cans here and there and it makes it taste so much better. I feel better too.

Fill your fridge with good alternatives that are still refreshing... lemonade was another favorite of mine or flavored waters, the Target brand is yummy.

    Its not easy!!!!! Good luck!

  • Years before getting pregnant I had switched to diet. When I got pregnant with my first I cut all artificial sweeteners and realized my body felt better and my weight stayed down more easily without that artificial stuff in my diet, so I never went back. I find that a large glass of seltzer with the tiniest bit (like 10%) of cranberry juice is a great substitute. Now I actually find soda both too sweet and too syrupy and can't drink it at all!

  • I made myself switch to diet, which I don't like as much, so I didn't drink it as often, and then phased it out completely.  It was really hard to stick to diet, but at least it curbed my NEED for soda.  GL

  • I think tea is a good step. We brew a mix of regular and chai tea and keep it in a pitcher in the fridge. Some of the green bottled teas have sucralose (splenda) or high fructose corn syrup in them, so I'd avoid those.

I like to drink water with lemon with a drop of stevia. A local health food store sells stevia in a bottle with an eye dropper.

  • I used to love soda. I still have some every now and then, but basically it is something that I will have at a child's party or something like that. If it isnt DS's birthday, I dont keep it in the house. My concern isnt so much the extra calories, it is the fact that soda is terrible for your health.

  • I was a min of a 6 pack of diet coke/day.  I switched to water and just didnt buy soda.  Every now and then I'll have one but honestly, I could do without.

  • I switched to flavored water during a previous pregnancy, and just didn't buy it. If it isn't in the house, it's too much hassle for me to go get it... I will occasionally have it when we go out to eat but I usually just order water or a tea instead... I haven't had soda except for probably once a month for six years now, and I have a hard time finishing one because now they taste way too syrupy for me :)

  • A long time ago, I used to drink a TON of pop. A ton. I just cut it out completely, pretty much cold turkey. It's definitely one of those things where the more you have it, the more you crave it (well, sugar in general). Now if I have a pop (which I do like maybe 4x a year, it makes me feel sort of crappy.

This is me...I love the carbonation so I have replaced my soda with LaCroix or Seagram's seltzer water.

  • I was also going to say carbonated water! My friend swears it got rid of her soda cravings. I, however, prefer my Coke.
  • I'm getting a kick out of those of you that call it "pop."  My in-laws are from Boston and they call it "tonic."  :)

I stopped as part of a health challenge at work.  Part of it was giving up a bad habit and that was mine.  I have one once in a while, but usually when we go out to eat or at a BBQ.  We don't keep it in the house anymore.
