Cloth Diapering Multiples

It was a big undertaking when we thought it was just one. Now it seems like insanity, but we're still strongly considering it. What brand do you guys use and what's been your experience with it?

Re: Cloth Diapering Multiples

  • After trying a few brands with our 2 year old daughter a couple years ago, we went with Fuzzibunz. We stuck with the Fuzzibunz with the twins, mostly because we were so used to them.

I like that you can get the fit really specific for the baby, even if it does require re-sizing as they grow with the interior elastic. I also like that the initial set we bought for my daughter 2 years ago is still in great condition, so the cost savings has been great.  They wash well, they're not super puffy so baby clothes still fit, and they are soft and hopefully very comfortable for the babies.

One thing I didn't consider is that our twins turned out to have very different body types (one long and skinny, the other short and fat). I have 2 different stashes of diapers that are sized for each of them. If you went with a cloth diaper that doesn't need individual sizing - the kinds that have elastic around the leg holes and velcro to close.

I think there are also places online where you can rent a stash of all different diapers to figure out what you like (and people do diaper parties for the same reason now too!). Good luck!

  • We did mostly use our aios for the newborn days (lil joeys and bg xs) for the newborn days and are just now transitioning to one size.  I'm liking my bum genius the best in the end, trim at this small size and they are fitting well.  I didn't like the elastic sizing of the fb, but I am also kinda lazy.  My husband is also a convert, and we have enough for 2 days, yet wash every day (so I have a little leeway).  Definitely doable and definitely for a more reasonable price than all those disposables would eventually cost!

  • We have all one size diapers so that we didn't have to invest in more as they grew.  We used disposables for the first month and then switched to cloth once they put on a little more weight.  We have some of bum genius, grovia, and fuzzi bunz.  We have saved so much money I can't imagine using disposables this whole time.

  • :) My boys have been CD'ed since 2 months old, and are almost 22 months old :)  It's been an adventure that we have been flexible with (we use disposabls at night bc we had a hard time finding the right absorbency for both of them...)...My 'stash' is 98%  FLIPS with stay dry inserts and hemp doublers.  I also have a handful of BG 3.0's that I'm using.  We wash every 1.5 days and  it's pretty doable with 36 inserts, 14 FLIPS and 6 BG's.   I will say though...I don't think I would have had the energy to do this if i went back to work. I'm sure other momma's could do it...but it would have been the straw to break teh camels back for me.  Just somethign to think about ;)

  • I started CDing at 3 months old. I use primarily kawaiis and some alva baby. Both are one size pocket diapers. I use pampers extra protection at night, since my guys are atomic peers.

  • We CD DD from 1-18 months and plan to do it again for these babies.  We have all BG one size 3.0 and 4.0 diapers.  Love them.

  • I haven't CDd multiples yet, but my little sisters were only a year apart and I was a teenager when they were in diapers, so I am familiar with the process.

For my boys, almost my whole stash is used.  The buy/sell/trade threads over on the CD board have been very helpful.  For the newborn stage, I have 28 used KL0s, a dozen orange edge GMD prefolds, and a few odds and ends (like 2 orange edge GMD workhorse fitteds, 4 BG XS, a handful of pocket fitteds that my MIL made, etc).  My MIL also made some covers, and I have some proraps and a bunch of wool covers.  I'd venture to say we have a two day stash in NB diapers.

For bigger sizes, I have a dozen flats, a dozen larger GMD prefolds, a few hemp prefolds, a few bamboo fitteds, and lots of used Thirsties and BG and some other brands I hadn't heard of.  We easily have a two day stash in all those, plus I bought my sister a CD stash (mostly BG and Econobum) that her daughter no longer uses, so she's sending those back to me, so I'll have plenty of wiggle room.  (Definitely check out Econobum if money is an issue. They're great diapers for the price.)

My whole stash, including wool covers, diaper sprayer, cloth wipes, wet bags, etc, so far has cost about $500.  If my kids potty train at 3 yo, if we were to use Target Up & Up diapers (not even including disposable wipes) our cost savings will be approximately $4k, so I'm not stressing wanting to buy a cute CD or wool cover here and there.

We already use cloth for pretty much everything else in our house, so even aside from the cost savings, it just makes sense for us.

I didn't CD my boys as newborns but now we use all FLIPS with mostly micro fibre inserts and some organic cotton for naps....I really like them and they adjust very nicely to fit my boys as they grow...and come in super cute colours! I got 5 days packs (each day pack comes with 2 covers and 6 inserts) and I do wash every other day....so for less then $300 (and they were actually gifted to us so $0) we can diaper our boys....FYI we use disposable at night because they are heavy wetters, tummy sleepers and sleep 12+ hours!
  • I wrote up my whole CDing twins experience here.

The Cliff Notes version is: I used 36 NB AIOs (BG XS, Lil Joey, Kissaluvs) for the first 9 weeks, and then we moved into OS Pockets, Flips, and fitteds with covers. We mostly have BG 4.0s, but also Rumparooz, Fuzzibunz Elite, and Alva Baby. I think I have 48 pockets these days, and I can wash every other day, but generally just go ahead and wash every day because it's NBD. I have two large hanging wet bags and 4 smaller wet bags for the diaper bags. You'll probably also need fleece and/or disposable liners in case you have to use non-CD-safe diaper cream.

ETA: my nighttime solution is Thirsties Fab Fitteds with a Thirsties hemp insert inside a Flip cover. We've gone 12 hours with no leaks. I really recommend having some hemp doublers for when you need extra absorbency.

  • I use Kawaii one-size.  I chose them because of the cost, and they work well.  I would also try Pretty Cloth Diapers if I had a stash to build again.

We used disposables until the boys grew into the one-size, around 4 months for us.  We still use disposables overnight, when we travel, and for in the diaper bag.

  • For our one size diapers, we have all pockets: BG 4.0s, Fuzzibunz, Rumparooz, Sunbaby, Kawaii, Blueberries... I think that's it. Blueberries are my favorite but are more expensive. Sunbaby is the least expensive brand that I have. For our NB diapers, we had a mix of fitteds, pockets, AIO, and some prefolds as back ups. I actually liked the fitteds the best even though I really didn't want to get them at first, I just got them because they were cheaper than getting all pockets and AIOs.

I really don't think CDing is hard. I'm not sure why everyone makes such a big deal about it. Putting the diapers on and taking them off is exactly the same as disposables for me. I do a few extra loads of laundry a week (not a big deal to me... our laundry already increased because of the babies) and I stuff the diapers after they go to bed while I watch TV or something. We love it... it's such a money-saver. They are so much cuter than disposables and we've had a diaper rash exactly once. In the time we used sposies while waiting for their circs to heal, we had several diaper rashes and the sposies leaked all.the.time. I honestly feel like I did more laundry with the sposies because I had to change their outfit with every diaper change. We don't have that problem with cloth.
