Diaper question for second time moms...

DH and I were out at BRU taking advantage of the Pampers sale yesterday, and he, of course, wanted to buy the BRU brand diaper, which was much cheaper.

I know that every baby responds differently to different diaper brands, different fits, etc. In your opinion, are Pampers, Huggies, and more expensive diapers worth the money?  What is your favorite brand?

  • I really like pampers, especially the pampers swaddlers, they are more money than the other brands but you can get some really good deals and Pampers will send you coupons too! They are much softer than a lot of other newborn and size 1 diapers.

My son is very tall and I found pampers are slimmer and longer than alot of other brands, so once he got older that was the main reason i would use them, i could keep him in a smaller size so it was more cost efficient then also.

  • I think they're worth the money. In the beginning I bought whatever I could get a good deal on.  When my huge stash ran out I had a clear favorite: Huggies.  We've used them ever since.  My experience with the cheaper ones is that they look like they're soaked with pee even if there's only a little bit in there.  That may not be a big deal, but I don't like it. I buy all our diapers on Amazon and it's cheaper than going to the store.  Especially BRU.  Their diapers are so expensive, even when they have deals.

  • I'm really probably not the right person to ask. I bought Pampers from day one, and tons of them, without even considering that they might not work for DS1. It was just my luck and they work like a charm, I love them. I've tried different types of Pampers as well and I purchase the more expensive ones (swaddlers, cruisers). I tried Huggies once and wasn't crazy about them - they were the pull up kind and it was hard to get them on.

Other than that, I've never tried any other brands.

With swim diapers, on the other hand, I prefer Huggies. Pampers' sizing kind of bothers me.

  • I've tried some off brands with mixed results. My son wears Sam's Club brand (I think they're called "Simply Right"). I've been just as pleased with those as the pampers/huggies. And I will say, other than in the newborn stage, I never saw an advantage to the more expensive versions of pampers (swaddlers) or huggies (little movers vs. snug n dry). I never tried the BRU store brand.
  • I like Huggies when they are little babies, Pampers for size 2+, and we have always switched to target store brand around size 4.

Are you buying using the Amazon Moms program? What do you usually end up spending per diaper?  I wouldn't normally buy from BRU, but it ended up being about .15/diaper, which I think is decent.

  • Until poop is solid, I like Huggies because they have an extra lip in the back.  It helps catch some of the seepage.  Then I like Pampers because they are softer and seem more comfortable for the baby.
  • If Target doesn't have size 4 diapers (which seems to happen all the time) for DD, I get Pampers Cruisers. I haaated Huggies. We had a giant box when DD was in size 1-2 and they NEVER held her poop in. We also tried Seventh Generation but they were like putting a paper bag on her.

For this LO, we'll probably use strictly Pampers until size 3 and then switch to Target brand. I prefer Pampers for the newborn stage since they are a lot softer.

  • pampers swaddlers. All the others (kirkland, huggies, up/up) all leaked.

Plus the wet stripe. I pph that thing.

I will say, it depends on the shape of your kid. DD is long and lean. Has skinny legs. That may be why all the others leaked.

Get a small pack of a bunch of different kinds and see what ones you like.

LOL.  I said this to my husband about the BRU brand, even though I've never used them.  "Why don't you just wrap him in a paper bag?"  We have received some Pampers as gifts, they just seem so much softer and more comfortable for sensitive skin.

  • We have only used Pampers & Huggies. I like Pampers better.

DS used to leak through Huggies, plus I think they are a smaller fit than Pampers. Also the velcro tab is harder plastic & can leave marks on baby's belly if you're not careful.

I have heard a lot of raves about Kirkland brand, which is from Costco, I think, too.

It's sorta trial & error. Everyone has their own preference.

Yes, I use Amazon Moms.  For the size/style diaper DS is in right now it's $0.27/diaper.  At BRU they'd be $0.34/diaper.

ETA: plus they get delivered to my house for free so I'm not spending gas money or buying extra crap I don't need from the store.  Also, DS is a big boy. Been in the 90% for height and weight his whole life.  Maybe that's why the Huggies work better for us (I see lots of moms mentioning Pampers for their long and lean babies).

  • We cloth diaper but use disposables for babysitters and going out so far I much prefer Target Brand [Up&Up] and Luvs over the more expensive brands. I don't any experience with other store brands but for a lot of baby stuff it's fine to skip the "name brands" and go generic [same with Formula].

  • I tried a lot of different brands when the girls were first born, and the only ones I liked were Pampers so I just stuck with those. I get mine from Amazon Mom, and we bought a prime membership. They were the only ones that didn't leak, held up well, fit well, or smell funny!

  • For me, it depends on the baby's age as to what brand I prefer. When ds was in nb, 1, and 2 diapers, we stuck to Pampers. We switched to Luvs when he was in 3 and now 4. We've recently switched to Wal-Mart brand and love them!!! I wouldn't do generic for newborns, but thats only because I love the way Pampers fits them. I did buy a pack of Huggies for this lo, mainly because I heard different brands are better for different genders.

  • We always used Pampers. The diapers held up well and she seemed very comfortable in them. We never felt the need to switch.

I did try a couple of random brands because my mom had that she would buy when she had grandkids over and I didn't like them. But, to be fair, it was only once or twice that she would use what my mom had. I usually always packed diapers for her.

  • I think they are definitely worth the money, especially since each box has a $2-2.50 off coupon inside for the next purchase.  Pampers fit my baby the best and she has YET to have a blowout experience with them.  She's been in Pampers since the beginning practically.   Huggies diapers have always failed us with leaks, but the Huggies wipes are the ONLY wipes I will use.  I have my one year old in the Pampers Cruisers wearing a size 3 right now, and when she gets into a 4, I'll be putting her into Luvs most likely.  They are actually really great with leaks, I just think they are a bit harsh on smaller babies bottoms.

  • I personally hated Huggies, loved Pampers and also loved the Fisher Price Night and Days diapers. The only problem with the FP ones where I couldn't always get them.

  • I hated pampers for our dd when she was a baby. We tried Huggies, but I find they smelled when she she woke up, so now we only use pampers. I also tried fisher price and didn't like them.

I have heard Kirkland is huggies.

  • 'Hated the BRU brand, they didn't absorb as well and they felt so stiff and plasticy.  I recently switched to the KROGER brand (King Soopers) which is in Colorado.  My sister liked Earth's best chlorine free diapers which are also cheaper.  I used to find coupons for huggies etc early on since baby didn't respond well to generic.  For the first 9 months I used only sensitive everything (Huggies or pampers).

  • I think Pampers Swaddlers and Cruisers are worth the money. Huggies didn't fit DS well -- they were too wide. But the one time I bought a grocery store brand of diapers, his whole bottom turned bright red. Not worth it to save a few bucks.
