S/o Nap Routine- Nap Length?

After AshleyC's post about weaning off of the swing for sleep, I'm glad to see I'm not crazy in working out a kinda detailed nap routine. I'm just curious how long your LO's naps last during the day?

DD has varied nap times depending on what we are doing. If we are out and she is in the stroller, it has become half and half between sleeping and being awake. If she is in the ergo, she almost always sleeps. In her crib, she does at least 30 mins now, working her way closer to 40 and some 45 mins naps.

Just curious!

I can get 60-90 minute naps most days in his crib, but he'll wake at least once and need soothing.

  • L's nap lengths are very unpredictable. Today she had 4 naps 45 min, 30 min, 35 min, 30 min. Yesterday 30 min, 20 min, 2 hrs, 30 min....I never know how long this little girl will sleep! But if she does sleep for a couple hours it's usually in the afternoon.

Edit- all of her naps are on me (or whoever is holding her).

  • Naps in her crib alone are generally 35 - 40 minutes, which I believe is one sleep cycle.

Naps on a person, in the car, or when we are out and about walking around in her stroller can be 1 - 2 hours.

I'm starting the drowsy but awake thing (just posted about it) and got her to nap for an hour in her crib today and yesterday. Don't know if it's correlated though.

I read on Troublesome Tots that catnapping is normal and some time between 2 and 6 months naps will stretch out. According that that, there is not much you can do before then to help. If by 6 months they have not stretched, it's most likely because baby is not putting him/herself to sleep without someone helping so they can't make it past 1 sleep cycle.

  • My LO takes a 30-45 minute nap, but around 30 minutes I go in and either put a hand on her or pat her back to get her through the sleep cycle change.  If I catch her before she fully wakes I can get an hour and half to two hour nap.

  • She takes all naps in her crib usually. Her first nap is 30 minutes, 2nd ranges from 2.5-4 hrs (4 hrs is only because she's in a growth spurt right now), and 3rd nap varies between 30-60 minutes.

We are usually cat naps. We've been out and about lately, so her schedule has been messed up. If we're home, I try and put her in her PNP as soon as I see sleepy signs. She usually talks to her toys in there, but sometimes falls asleep. We usually get an hour out of a nap. If she passes out on the boob, I try and relocate her if I can. Every few days I get a good 3 hour nap out of her. I'm expecting one tomorrow because she hasn't slept a lot the past 2 days. We're making sure to stay home (or have her stay home with someone) all day tomorrow to help re-regulate her schedule. Hopefully we can get a few good naps in.

  • I'm just getting back to tracking their sleeping and eating and looking for patterns, not so much scheduling, but Claire usually naps for anywhere from 1-3 hours (sometimes she'll be up for 3 hours and then sleep for 3 hours during the day), and Etta naps anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half.

This is very true.  My DS1 catnapped until 4-5 months (then started doing proper naps) so I'm finding some comfort in that.  DS2 catnaps a lot.. but I never know what I'm going to get on any given day!  Some days it's four 40-min catnaps.  Some days it's one or two catnaps and a "proper" nap of 2hrs+.  It's normal, hang in there:)
