Insurance for newborn the first 30 days.

DS is on DH's insurance and the baby will be added to DH's insurance when he or she is born. Is the baby under my insurance for the first 30 days, or does DH's insurance retroactively cover the baby during those 30 days?

    It should be retroactive coverage, but check the policy to be sure.

    I just talked to my insurance about this because I got all the billing codes as I want to know what delivery and the hospital will cost us. While her insurance may cover it, the baby is a different person so any deductible, etc... would start over for this baby not just add on to hers. There will be separate bills for mom and for baby.

  • I think you need to call the insurance company and tell them your due date and as soon as you get the baby's SSI # you call them with it and everything will be covered you have 90 days to notify my ins co

    Insurance companies allow an employee to make a "family status qualifying event change" within 31 days of the activity - whether it is the birth or adoption of a child, marriage, divorce, etc.  I've never seen a company give you any longer than 31 days (someone mentioned they had 90 days) but they are sticklers if you don't meet the 31 days. 

    With us having our babies in January, if you don't meet the 31 days requirement, you could risk not having your baby covered until the next January...depending on when your open enrollment is.  Mine is every fall for coverage start in January so having the baby in January 2013 and then missing the 31 day period, would mean I'd have to wait until January 2014 to cover the baby on my insurance.  Ugh!  That would mean I'd have to look for coverage elsewhere which could be really expensive.

    I work in Human Resources for my company and do a lot with benefits.  If anyone has any questions, maybe I can help.

  • We have 90 days to be able to add baby to insurance coverage and it goes retro back to the date of birth. They will only bill the insurance you provide so make sure that they have DH's insurance on file for baby.
