Postpartum Depression

**Guilt**

I am 21 years old and married to my husband mike. We just had our son almost four months ago. He is doing great and growing fast! But I was not able to breastfeed him due to marijuana found in my system. I am not a drug addict but I do deal with bipolar/depression and clinical depression. I smoked to reduce my over whelming stress, anxiety, depression, mood swings, and due to my anxiety I do not eat anything. So being prego I had to do something not being able to take my normal medications. I am feeling like I gave up on him and let him down. Breast feeding was something that I was looking forward to for so long. I watched him go through all the formulas on the shelves and screaming in pain from them. He has now been on a new formula for his milk protein intolerance. I feel guilty and very sad that I could not supply my son with the food that he needed. Not even being recovered yet from the pregnancy and birth I am starting to feel that I want to get pregnant again and do it right this time. I have not expressed this idea of another child to ANYONE! I don't want them to judge me, or tell me that I am crazy and do not need another baby now. I don't know what to do to shake this feeling of guilt. Does anyone have any advice for me? I have mirena as birth control and I will not be pregnant until we decide to take it out!

  • Im sorry your feeling guilty, but I wouldn't beat yourself up over this. I know a lot of people that smoked during their pregnancy for one reason or another and they have perfectly healthy babies. May I ask how you came about not breastfeeding him because of this?  Were you told that you couldn't by a doctor?   Don't feel bad about not breastfeeding either. Although they say that breast is best for the baby, formula has just as much nutrients and im sure your son was still getting everything he needed. I wasn't able to bf my second due to my milk supply and he is super healthy and never really gets sick.

I hope you can find a way to relax and not let things beat you up so much.  Your already a good mother being concerned for your child.  I wouldn't get pregnant again just to do it right because it may cause you to neglect your son that you have now.  Just focus on him. You can't change the past, you can only mold your future. :)

    I agree with this.

You could also research relactation and perhaps give it another try. I've never heard of someone being told they can't nurse because of pot in their system. Maybe do some research on that as well? It seems to me that occasional use wouldn't be much of a problem.

  • I am sorry I cannot answer your question but if you are interested for either this baby or any future babies there are lots of mommies out there that have over supply and will donate to you. Mom to mom donation of breastmilk is very safe! If you want more info you can visit facebook and type in "eats on feets" followed by the state you live in.

I hope this helps you some. Good luck with everything!
