Another question about EC

Hi, newbie/lurker here [:) ]I know that you can start as soon as birth, but do you need to wait a little longer with some babies? I know when my LO is going to have a BM because he makes a face and grunts, but sometimes he does this for up to 20 min before going.  I obviously don't want to hold him over the potty that long, LOL.  He's only 7 weeks.  Will this process speed up as he grows?

Re: Another question about EC

  • Maybe being in the sitting position will help him?  It's worth a shot.  I've always thought that not having to push against the diaper was probably good too.

  • My guy is 7 weeks and went on the potty for the first time last night. I took his diaper off and sat him up and he went within 2 minutes. I think sitting and being naked made the process go much faster.

  • Early on it's not so much about no diapers (although that can be a bonus!) as it is about learning to communicate with your LO.  So when you see your LO grunting or trying to poop, you can leave him in the diaper and just grunt back, so that he knows that you know what's up.  Of course you can hold him over a potty too, but it's not really a mandatory part of EC.  As you continue, you'll probably become better at figuring out his cues and have more success at catching poops :)

  • Honestly,y LO never really had any cues. So around six weeks we just started putting her on the potty ( holding her over it by her thighs) when she woke up and after every feeding. She pooped on the potty a lot and we had very few poopy diapers. Pee was hit or miss.

I say just go for it and if he fusses then take him off.

I'm very confused.  You hold your baby up by her thighs?

  • If you lean the baby's back against your chest, then you put your hands under their thighs and hold them in a sitting position with their bum over the sink or toilet.
