Solid food question

I started LO on solids almost a month ago.  I give her approx. 2 tbsp of oatmeal in the mid-morning, along with a vegetable (haven't introduced fruits yet--planning on doing so next week), and brown rice and a veggie in the evening. Does that sound about right??  I am not sure if I should give her more or less of the cereals.  What is the typical guideline?  She LOVES the oatmeal and brown rice, but likes the veggies as well.

I am  confused, because on the one hand I read that at this age most of a baby's diet should come from breast milk or formula, but on the other hand they should be eating 3 solid meals by 10 months of age and cut back on formula?  I just worry that I am giving her too many solids.  What do you all do??  Is giving 2 meals with starch too much??

Re: Solid food question

  • We did rice once a day for a month. Started oatmeal and veggies/fruits the second month. Right now she eats twice a day and gets 3 ounces per meal. I rarely give her cereal anymore. It is usually a fruit at lunch and a veggie at dinner.

I wouldn't worry about it being too much starch. As long a your LO is still getting the same amount of milk there isn't much to worry about. Solids are just extra.

  • We typically do 2 solids a day 1 in the morning and 1 at night.  Roughly 4-5 oz of veggies or fruits and she only eats them thick so we have to load them up with cereal, 2oz of fruits or veggies without cereal would do nothing for her.  After a solids meal she gets a 4oz bottle of formula with no cereal.  During the day she gets 1-2 oz bottles without cereal, if she only gets 1 then she gets some juice (3/4 water 1/4 juice) or water in a cup so that she stays hydrated (suggested by our pedi since shes not a big fruit eater).
