Zantac questions

I took my lo to the ENT Tuesday and he perscribed her .8ml 2x a day. I changed her pedi today and she asked how much she was taking and what her weight was. She was 15.7 pounds I believe on Tuesday. She said this was too low hence why I probably haven't seen a change yet. She said you should see improvement within a week though. And she also said taking it 3x a day is better because zantac has a short shelf life. Does your lo take 2x a day or 3x?

So he said 1.6mg a day and she is saying 2.4mg. He never gave me any instruction on when to give it or anything. She said take 3x roughly 6-8 hrs apart and to do my best trying to give before feedings. I feel like the pedi is right on with this and wanted to ask others if you have or had a 15 pound baby on Zantac do you recall how much they were taking?

Re: Zantac questions

  • Zantac does have a short life span. That's why giving it 3x a day would be better. You want to give it on a empty stomach a half hour before feeding. It works better this way. It is very weight sensitive so as DD weight increase the meds will too. It also should be stored in the fridge and make sure it's flavored. My DS was on it and it stopped working so we moved to Prilosec so I am not sure of the dosage but if it was me I go with the higher amount.

  • DD outgrew her reflux, but at 12lbs she was on 1.2mg 2x/day.  We did it around 7am & 7pm, but it did seem like it was wearing off around 5pm.  I don't think it needs to go in the fridge, the ped & pharmacist never said anything about that to us.

Nobody said anything about putting into the fridge. I haven't done this is this ok?  Nowhere on the insert info from the pharmacy does it say either.

  • DS was 14 pounds at his 2 month appointment and was prescribed 1.5 ml twice a day for a total of 3.0 daily.
  • Zantac did not work for us but when we were on it we did it 3x a day as they metabolize it pretty quickly.  It does not need to be refrigerated unless they are compounding it for you...the standard liquid zantac is stable.  We were on the full 2.4mg 3x daily at the highest dose.  Like the PP said give it on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before a meal.

Yes it's fine. The advantage is that it helps keep the compounding agent longer by being in the fridge and dark. With my DS right now we get his Prilosec fill every 2 weeks because of how sensitive he is to the break down and it helps him

For those of you taking it 3x a day before meals...do you just do your best at keeping the meal 30min later? Finding this a little tough since my lo eats on demand. For the most part she goes 3-4 hours apart. But she goes to sleep at night anywhere from 6:30-7:30 and she wakes up anywhere from 5:50-7:30.

For instance she woke today and had her medicine at 7:55 I know she will not be awake at this time tonight for her last dose. I'm going to shoot for giving her 2nd dose around 1ish depending if she is napping then. So more than likely she'll need her 3rd dose around 6-6:30 is this ok? I don't want to over complicate things just want to do this correct.

Also if she had a really long nap and when she woke it's already been 3-31/2 hrs since she ate and she needs her medicine how should I handle this? I know she'll be hungry!

Interesting to see that babies who weight much less than my lo are taking alot more than what the ENT said to take. Really pisses me off that he was way off!
