Help with shallow latch

Hi. My two week old and I are having some issues with a shallow latch. Often she does not open wide enough to get a really good latch especially if I have to wake her for feeding.

I have tried detaching her and tickling her mouth with my nipple, waiting for a yawn ( who has time for that?!), but not much success. I can usually get a better latch than just the nipple but still not a good one. In fact the only times I get a really good latch is when she is starved an crying but I don't want to wait for her to cry.

So far it hasn't been a major issue - she is still gaining weight, lots of wet and poopy diaper, and no pain for me. But I want to fix the problem before we introduce the bottle or pacifier.

 Any advice?!?! Suggestions?

  • We had this problem. My LC showed me how to recline some and position LO so she was basically face down, that way gravity caused her to latch deeper.

  • My LC showed me a way to hold the breast to make sure they take more than just the nipple. When you hold your breast from you want to make your hand in the shape of an open 'U' around the perimeter of the areola. Bring baby to your breast and keep holding their head so they stay latched. If your hand is in the shape of a 'C' instead it squashes the area instead of supporting it.
