January 2012 Moms

I'm going brunette. And bald. And gray.

I used to be blonde.  Ash blonde, except in the summer or during the years we lived on our boat, and then it was a sunny golden blonde.

During my pregnancy I noticed that my hair was gradually getting darker.  Now I would consider myself a brunette.  I kind of like the drama of having brown hair and blue eyes.

But over the past two months every time I shower or brush my hair, I've lost handfuls of hair.  It looks like a small rodent is lurking in the bottom of the tub after I finish shampooing and conditioning. This didn't worry me.  I figured it was a natural post-partum shed.

Well, this week I realized that under the few long hairs left around my face, the hairs at my temples are really short.  So it is growing back in.  But it is much sparser than elsewhere on my head.  And it is silver/gray.

If this keeps up I'm going to wind up with two silver streaks on either side of my otherwise brown head.   I'm not really ready to look like a comic book character.

I've never colored my hair.  Are there any home coloring products you all like?  Or is this best left to the professionals?

  • I've never colored at home but I've been getting highlights since highschool - I would ask around from friends who you know get their hair colored to find a good stylist. They should be able to advise you on what type of color or highlights would work best to cover the grey and blend with your natural haircolor (this is important to me so that roots don't show as bad and you don't have to go in as often). I would think that maybe you could switch to doing it yourself at home if you felt comfortable with it, but I'd want a professional to do it the first time, personally.

  • Professionals, especially if you're experiencing hair loss. They'll know what to do and how to treat your hair. Plus, it'll probably look better.

I also hear you on the hair loss thing. My hair is still falling out at an alarming rate. I always had really, really thick hair. My mom used to joke that I had enough for three people. Now, it's just enough for person who is going bald.

  • Kids do that to ya, they give you gray hair Stick out tongue

My new baby hair seemed almost gray but when it really started coming in it was still my brown hair. Could it be that it appears that way with it being summer time and it's lighter because of it and maybe seems more gray due to the contrast of your now darker hair overall?

You can try some maybe semi-permanent colors first and see how you like it? I did hear from some hair stylists to stay away from Loreal hair dyes as there is something else it it that's even worse for your hair than other brands..

Real henna is really good for your hair BUT unless you want to be a firy redhead it's not for you... :/

  • I was a blondie as a child but it has been getting darker ever since I was a teen. I have always had thick hair so I haven't really paid much attention to it growing back but I am glad it has finally stopped falling out like crazy. I am definetly getting a lot more grey (something about not getting sleep maybe?) My mom always blamed her grey on us kids so I think I am going to keep mine and blame it all on DS. I have highlighted before and that might work for you if you didn't want to do too much. I would let a pro do it but that is because I had some crazy orange hair in college from playing with color myself! Good luck!
  • i like the john frieda foam color....or feria. i only color at home and have never haad a problem
  • I use Revlon Colorsilk. I used to use Perfect Ten but it always takes two boxes to dye all my hair and the Revlon is only three dollars a box. $6 vs $20, $6 wins.

Hair loss...have you gone to see your doctor? Especially if you think it should have stopped falling out? Maybe thyroid?

I have bald spots :( I also noticed the hair on both sides is noticeably shorter--guess it all came out and is growing back in. I hate wearing a ponytail now because you can see it

  • I would recommend a stylist for a first timer.  But I have been doing my own hair dye for years.  I use L'Oreal Preference to cover all of my grays and it does a good job.  My hair is healthy according to my hairdresser, but I do dye it dark brown, so it is less damaging than if I were lightening my hair.  I also only dye the roots each time and not my whole head.  I do that about once every year or year and a half to even out the color, but hair is naturally slightly lighter at the ends than the roots anyways.

  • I like Clairol's Natural Instincts when playing with new colors. It's semi-permanent and if I choose one that is close to my own it just looks like highlights. I have light strawberry blonde hair but dye it a darker blonde so I don't look so washed out. I've been doing it since I was 17 without a problem.

That said, if you're really worried about the loss I'd go see a professional first. It's pricey, but they are the experts.

Exactly!  And since I'm seriously lazy about how I look when I'm working from home, the ponytail is my default do.  But now every time I look in a mirror all I see are those bald spots.  And my 'stash, but that's another post entirely.

Colorsilk is what I use. Ive been dyeing my dark blond hair super light blond for years with it.
