Can he get it again? Do I need to toss & replace things like sippys & his toothbrush? (since they can't be boiled) or is it ok to just run the through the dishwasher?
They actually can get it again, but it's very rare. I didn't get rid of anything, and I'm sure you're fine. I think if they get infected again, it's from a brand new source - like a different kid. Like I said, it is RARE though so you should be free & clear! Woo!
We replaced his toothbrush while he had HFM since he had it right on/in his mouth. I was afraid of the toothbrush spreading it.
He actually just got a tiny little blister right in the corner of his mouth yesterday & I am freaking out that it is HFM again. We are probably a special case, but - I put the ointment we got last time on it again in hopes that it stops whatever it is. The ointment we had was prescribed when it was first diagnosed as a bacterial infection.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing that they can't get the same strain again? ugh

'm not sure that it's even a different strain. I think it just has to be a fresh source. Like after a certain amount of time, the virus dies. It's rare that they'll get it again, but I'm pretty sure it's the same virus strain, just fresh. Usually, they don't get re-infected even if they are all up on some infected kid.
There are several viruses that cause HFM, with Coxsackievirus A16 being the most common. Once you get it, you are immune to that particular virus, but can still get HFM from another virus that causes HFM.
I'd probably replace the toothbrush and just run the sippys through the dishwasher using the heat or sanitation cycle. The CDC recommends washing toys with a bleach/water mixture.

Thanks!
I may replace his toothbrush (it's been a few months & prob time for a new one anyway) but I won't worry about the sippys.
