We're getting ready to turn in our official application; most likely this week. I assume, upon acceptance, we'll be starting our homestudy part next month. At what point did you tell your boss your plans? Did you wait until you were on the waiting list? Did you tell them before that?
Most, if not all, my coworkers know that we are adopting. Many of them read our blog. I've not been secretive about it, and wouldn't be if my boss approached me. I know she would be 100% supportive, but I don't want to put any ideas in her head prior to anything actually really happening and moving. Does that make sense?
Re: At what stage in this process did you tell your boss?
Hmm...interesting. I wonder if I'm just not that far along in the process as of yet to have to verify income? We have that all filled out on our huge application, but maybe there's more we have to clarify for the agency during our homestudy process? If that's the case, my hand will be forced. I haven't had to use her as a reference or anything.
:::Our Adoption Journey:::
Evan James was born 1/24/13 and matched with us 2/20/13. The LOVE OF MY LIFE!!!
DH's boss knew earlier than mine did. He was one of our references.
I didn't tell my boss until our profile went active. For some reason DH wanted me to hold off. I think in the back of his mind he didn't want me to lose projects, etc. just because I *might* be leaving at some indeterminate time.
FWIW, he was very supportive.
I was very honest with my boss about it after we made the decision to pursue adoption, before we had even filled out paperwork. I basically told him that once we were on the waiting list, it could be days, months or years. I could leave work on a momen's notice and need to take maternity leave, or I might have plenty of time to plan. I work for a great guy who said, "Go for it. Just let me know when you know." I'm pretty lucky in terms of employers.
We did not need employers to verify employment, but we did have to provide proof of income via pay stubs and last year's W-2s.
For us, the employment verification part came after the initial application phase, and was part of the paperwork that we had to submit for our homestudy (phase 2 at our agency). I was all gung-ho though, and had all the paperwork for the entire homestudy done to submit with our application, even though only a few documents were required to apply.

I have a great telling my boss story:
I was interviewing for a promotion (I've been with my company for almost 5 years), and my interview was scheduled with my District Manager for an hour after we went into our agency to sign contracts.
When I arrived for my interview, I was all excited/nervous from the contract signing...and my DM (who only knew I had an "appointment" that morning) asked how my morning was, and what appointment had I been to. I spilled the beans right then & there! Since we're doing international adoption I mentioned that this was a 2 year process, and that I was still very interested and committed to the position I was interviewing for. He was very excited and interested, asking why we'd chosen Ethiopia, etc.
Well, a few weeks later (after I got the position) he actually pulled me aside and told me that he and his wife are also adopting from Ethiopia! He is adopting an older, "waiting" child...whom they plan to bring home in 2012! So because of that, he has been super helpful in helping me get my paperwork/employee verification, giving me a pep talk before the home study, etc.
That is a great story!!
