Adoption

At what stage in this process did you tell your boss?

We're getting ready to turn in our official application; most likely this week. I assume, upon acceptance, we'll be starting our homestudy part next month. At what point did you tell your boss your plans? Did you wait until you were on the waiting list? Did you tell them before that?

Most, if not all, my coworkers know that we are adopting. Many of them read our blog. I've not been secretive about it, and wouldn't be if my boss approached me. I know she would be 100% supportive, but I don't want to put any ideas in her head prior to anything actually really happening and moving. Does that make sense?

Re: At what stage in this process did you tell your boss?

  • He had to fill out paperwork for us, so I told him pretty early on.

  • Ditto the PP.  We had to provide proof of income, and part of that was a letter from our employers stating that our positions were permanent, since neither of us had been with our jobs for much more than a year.  I'd already told my boss though, because I inquired as to whether or not our company offered adoption assistance benefits.

Hmm...interesting. I wonder if I'm just not that far along in the process as of yet to have to verify income? We have that all filled out on our huge application, but maybe there's more we have to clarify for the agency during our homestudy process? If that's the case, my hand will be forced. I haven't had to use her as a reference or anything.

  • Very early on - we needed letters of reference/proof of employment from both of our bosses.

  • DH's boss knew earlier than mine did. He was one of our references.

I didn't tell my boss until our profile went active. For some reason DH wanted me to hold off. I think in the back of his mind he didn't want me to lose projects, etc. just because I *might* be leaving at some indeterminate time.

    FWIW, he was very supportive.

  • I was very honest with my boss about it after we made the decision to pursue adoption, before we had even filled out paperwork. I basically told him that once we were on the waiting list, it could be days, months or years. I could leave work on a momen's notice and need to take maternity leave, or I might have plenty of time to plan. I work for a great guy who said, "Go for it. Just let me know when you know." I'm pretty lucky in terms of employers.

We did not need employers to verify employment, but we did have to provide proof of income via pay stubs and last year's W-2s.

For us, the employment verification part came after the initial application phase, and was part of the paperwork that we had to submit for our homestudy (phase 2 at our agency).  I was all gung-ho though, and had all the paperwork for the entire homestudy done to submit with our application, even though only a few documents were required to apply.

  • As for employment verification, I did that through HR and gave them a BS excuse of needing it for a mortgage or refinancing, i can't remember which. My boss wasn't involved.

We had to provide w-2's as proof of employment, but since then I am currently looking for a new job.  Looking at both consulting and full time.  My dilemma is what if I get a fantastic full time job and have to quit after 5 months.  I figure I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

  • I told my supervisor when I did the application because we need verification of employment but didn't say anything to her about it again until we met the birthparents and knew the due date.  We didn't tell my actual boss until 3 weeks before I plan on quitting because it took me that long to decide when/if I wanted to quit or just take maternity leave for a while.

  • We came out about a month or 2 before our HS. Both his boss and mine were super excited for us.
  • We've just barely started and my boss already knows, but I am very work-centric and have a great relationship with all my bosses. FWIW, they are all super supportive and excited.
  • Right when we decided to adopt! Then again, I work for a church so they all already knew about all our struggles with child #2. Also my boss and my boss' boss were 2 of our references.

  •  Umm...about 2 weeks before we traveled :) But, we didn't know that we were actually going to be able to travel until 2 weeks before, and my boss (ex-boss) was a waste. I knew she wouldn't be supportive of me taking leave for any reason and would try to make things difficult for me if I told her beforehand (and she did).
  • Most of DH's coworkers already know (not sure if his actual supervisor knows, but the guy he works for most of the time knows for sure).  I don't think I've mentioned it to my boss, but we're still in the saving phase.  I'm sure I'll tell her in the next few months, since we're hoping to submit our application at the beginning of 2013 and I may need to take a weekend day off for our seminar, etc.  My job is a weird situation, though, because I'll only be working there until May because it's a graduate assistant position and I'll be graduating then.

  • We told them during the homstudy because we knew we would need employment verifications/references from them. If we didn't need that I probably would have waited until we were "officially waiting" to tell them. I would say if your coworkers know and it isn't a secret around the office, I would probably let your boss know. I would at least want them to hear it from me rather than overhear other people in the office talking about it.

  • I have a great telling my boss story:

I was interviewing for a promotion (I've been with my company for almost 5 years), and my interview was scheduled with my District Manager for an hour after we went into our agency to sign contracts.

When I arrived for my interview, I was all excited/nervous from the contract signing...and my DM (who only knew I had an "appointment" that morning) asked how my morning was, and what appointment had I been to. I spilled the beans right then & there! Since we're doing international adoption I mentioned that this was a 2 year process, and that I was still very interested and committed to the position I was interviewing for. He was very excited and interested, asking why we'd chosen Ethiopia, etc.

Well, a few weeks later (after I got the position) he actually pulled me aside and told me that he and his wife are also adopting from Ethiopia! He is adopting an older, "waiting" child...whom they plan to bring home in 2012! So because of that, he has been super helpful in helping me get my paperwork/employee verification, giving me a pep talk before the home study, etc. :)
