It was confirmed we have velamentous cord insertion. The Dr. explained it as the cord is growing from the side of the placenta and not the center like it should. I will be going in every 4 weeks for an U/S to monitor his growth as this sometimes prevents the baby from getting all the nutrients it needs. She said that is rare and if it happens we would go at 37 weeks. Of course Dr. Google talks about other complicationsthe may come with birth but I am trying to avoid reading to much into that as of yet. Anyone heard of this. Have it?
Re: velamentous cord insertion
Hi, I had it with my first pregnancy. However, I had other issues with it as well like vascular issues with the baby. I delivered a baby girl at 26 weeks, I was hospitalized for 2 weeks before I delivered and she was more like a 23 week baby because of her growth restriction. She was under one pound and did not make it, she passed away 2 days later.
Have they sent you to see a specialist? If not, I would go to someone who is really familiar with it. However, if you have not had any issues up to now, I am sure you are ok. I had many issues with blood tests, had a huge cyst growing on my right ovary. As I said, mine was more vascular with the weird cord insertion.
Sorry you are going through this, I know it is not fun.
Have you don any research? I sadly have done too much and am now freaked out. They make it sound as if you should always have an early C section, as full term and or birth can cause blood vessels to rupture killing the baby. First it looked like that would only happen if VCI causes vassa previa, but as I kept reading they sad it could also happen with just VCI. Have your Dr.s said anything about this?
I have not done any additional research. In fact, the Dr at MFM told me to stay away from the Google on this one. No one has said anything regarding a C-section or anything of the sort. They know that I want to do a med free vag birth if possible and that I don't want to be induced unless medically necessary. They are fine with that. My doctor even said that he doesn't expect me to go early or on my due date. He feels I'll go at least a week past. Like I said...the big concern was the Placenta Previa which would have been cause for an early term C Section...probaby around 37 or 38 weeks because if you try to do a vag birth with a previa, you CAN rupture blood vessels and bleed out. But, there hasn't been anything mentioned regarding the VCI. I'd just ask your doctor at your next appointment what THEY feel is the best course of action for you and your LO. Google always pulls up so many contradicting results that it's hard to weed the truth from the BS and fear tactics.
ETA: After my 6 week follow up, they determined my placenta moved up far enough. I have not had to have any more ultrasounds and was never referred to a high risk OB. They are pretty convinced that my pregnancy is progressing normally and low risk. Hope this helps. :-)
Yea I was told the same, but I can?t help myself. I was diagnosed at 17 years old with Ovarian Cancer after 6 months of my Dr. saying everything is fine. So I am now extra obsessive.
Anyhow, My Dr. mentioned C Section, IF his growth does start to become a problem. Yea I will continue seeing the specialist every 4 weeks just because of the VCI. My placenta is no where near my cervix.
I am a worse case scenario person, I get that but with my past its hard not to be. If it happened even once then there is cause for concern. Even if the percentage is 1% there still has to be someone in the 1%.
I am glad your Dr.s are not worried and you are having a healthy pregnancy. I am hoping once I get further along I too will feel better.
Can't argue with that logic. I'll definitely be sending T&P's your way. I know it's a scary diagnosis and to not have any control over it sucks balls. Keep us updated on your visits with the specialist!
BTW, great to see you here, Handburger!
