Feeding every 90min. at night because he can't self soothe. WTD?

My LO is sleeping 4-5 hours, eating, then up every 1 hour to 90min. after that to snack because he can't self soothe.  He sucks on his hands but just gets frustrated and ends up crying.  So, I am up every 90 min. feeding him a snack.  Oh, he refuses to take a paci too.

What to do?  I don't know how to help him learn to self soothe and being up all night isn't really working for me.  Plus, it's getting worse and the wakings more frequent, so I think he's building some bad sleep associations.  I'd like to nip that in the bud.

He's in his crib right now for his morning nap and he's wide awake.  I thought I'd give him some practice time but he's been up for almost 2 hours which is a lot for him.  It will either help him or make him over tired, we shall see.

Anyone have thoughts on what I can do other than CIO?  He's too young and shares a wall with my 3 year old so that won't work.

TIA!

  • Try a different paci....it took 6 different types to get Rosalie to take one at all.
    DD#1 11.7.07 - DD#2 11.2.10 (3rd Tri Loss)- DD#3 4.18.12

  • What happens if you don't feed him but just try to rock/shush him back to sleep? We're trying that with DS in the hopes that he'll eventually realize he's not getting a snack and it's not worth getting up for. Sometimes it's not possible, but probably 2 or 3 night wakings we can get him back down without feeding him. Yes, we're still up just as much, but we're hoping it helps in the long run. Ditto Dragonfly about the paci - DS likes the MAM ones.

  • I am tring not to sound like a sarcastic jerk but my LO has been sttn since the beginning. What about offering a bottle of pumped bm for his last feeding to make sure he is getting enough milk? I've basically been a EPer since her birth and I would love to nurse more but there are some pros to pumping a little too.

That's unusual and just your baby's nature. I doubt it's a question of milk quantity. In our case, DH gives two bottles overnight and DS nurses the rest of the night, so he's getting plenty of milk. I also nurse him every 2-2.5 hours during the day whether he asks for it or not.

  • We have tried Soothies, Advent and Gumdrop pacis.  He'll sometimes take one, but not usually.  I am also an EPer and he is offered 6 oz. bottles but never takes more than 3 oz. even when awake.

I still think this may be worth a try.  My dd has sttn since 6 weeks, but that is when we started giving her bottles plus bfing because i was returning to work.  ON the flip side our DD is not sleeping much during the day and really wants to be held when napping so we don't sleep because when she goes to bed is when we try to get EVERYTHING done.

I am going paci shopping today.  I have not been able to get ev to take one, but have only given her the nuk.  she takes a bottle (with BM or F) and she nurses like a champ, but won't touch the paci, she just spits it out and hollers at me about it.  (its actually kinda cute)

  • I might try swaddling.  I would also try something else besides nursing every time but I know often times nursing is the only thing that works.  I'm sure it's just a phase he'll outgrow.  Is he perhaps on a growth spurt?

  • My LO has been doing this for the past month too, OP.

FWIW, he freakin' loves the paci. When he wakes up at night though, he wants the boob. We swaddled up until the past week when he started rolling over in it and it became a no go. I wish DH would get up with him at night and see if he can just get him back to sleep without the tempting aroma of milk in his face, but that's a whole different story. So, it's just me and I'll try rocking/shushing/etc but he just keeps burying his face in my boobs and fussing until I pull one out and he's asleep in 2 minutes.

Last night was our first night of decent sleep in a month, and that was because I got him on a nap schedule during the day. I realized I wasn't letting him sleep enough during the day, so now I'm trying to get him down no more than 1.5 hours after he last woke up. He only woke up twice last night, as opposed to exactly what you're describing (an initial 3-4ish hour stretch, then up hourly just to comfort suck). Could be coincidence, but we're trying it again today.
