Opinions on registering please!

i'm typically more of a lurker, since i'm usually at work when i'm checking in on thebump. but i am looking for some opinions on our unique situation.

DH and are are expecting our first but i feel like registering wouldn't really make any sense for us. My father has a two year old son and is giving us all the big stuff LO will need. (crib, car seat, stroller pack and play, swing, bouncy seat you name it he's giving it to us)

So really all our LO will need is disposable things (diapers wipes ext.) and clothes (if we have a girl)

My question is would you still register if you had everything you need with you first born, or would you just say to heck with it and not do a traditional registry?

TIA!

  • I probably wouldn't register.  Sounds like the things you will need are the items that normally would not be on a registry.  You may want to look at a sample registry to see if there is anything that you are not thinking of that you might want to register for.

  • I would go ahead and register for two reasons. One, if there are loved ones who WANT to give you gifts, they're going to do it whether you have a registry or not. It just might end up being stuff you don't love. Two, even if you never share your registry, you still get a completion coupon for any unpurchased items on your registry (at least at BRU, likely others as well). It seems like there are plenty of smaller things you could still put on a registry! That's my 2 cents Wink

  • So you have nursing stuff/pillow/pads/etc, bedding, bottles, pacifiers, toys, a bath tub, bath mat, bath stool, bath toys/wash, washcloths, potty seat, mirror for the car, thermometer, swaddle blankets, a diaper bag, baby carrier (i.e. Moby), a high chair, sippy cups, any closet organizers or baskets you might want... too?

I don't know...a lot of the big stuff you listed I didn't get off my registry.  It was all the little stuff (stuff I listed, and then some!) that people bought for me.  Also, you get a completion coupon so even if a lot of this stuff you think you'd just rather buy for yourself anyway...you may still consider a registry so you can get a completion coupon for when you do make the big purchase of all the little stuff.

But yeah, I think you *may* be being a little short-sighted about what you'll have and what you might want/need, so maybe just take a look at some registry lists to see if you could actually put together a decent registry before nixing it altogether.  I assume you're likely to have a shower?  It's just nice for people to see your preferences and tastes, and get some ideas...people will still buy you diapers and clothes most likely.

  • It would depend on whether or not someone was planning on throwing a shower for us.  People like to shop with a registry for showers, so if I was having a shower I'd definitely register.  There are still lots of things to put on the registry - bath items, towels, blankets, bibs, bowls, pacifiers, bottles, and clothing.  You will still want some new items for your baby.

If you aren't having a shower then I probably wouldn't register, if someone would like to get something for you they will either just go buy something or will ask if there is something you want/need.

oddly enought i have everything you listed, i've gone over every sample registry i can find and talked to my cousin who works a BRU and the only things we don't have are gender specific clothes and diapers, we have literally had everything given to us, i have a lot of friends who have recently finished having babies and whatever i didn't get from my dad i got from them.

and i'm custom sewing all the nursery bedding (i come from a family of quilters)

there are obviously things like paci's that i dont want used but i don't see the point in creating a registry for paci's and clothes.... KWIM?

The tentative plan for my shower is to do a "build baby's library" shower and have everyone bring their favorite baby book, i know loved ones will want to give gifts but we really don't NEED anything, so it feels silly to register, maybe i should just register for the few things we do need and not tell anyone o i can use the completion coupon.

it seems kinda like a PIA to go register if it's just for a coupon (The closest BRU is a 2hr drive)

  • I think I would still register for the completion coupon. After my shower we went and used the completion coupon to buy a few more clothes. We also purchased the little stuff like: boppy, boppy cover, thermometer, brush and comb, baby wash and lotion, clothes hangers, sheets for the crib and bassinet and breathable bumper

I am not having a shower (well maybe at work) but I am making a registry, if for nothing else but the completion coupon!

You can register online at Amazon, Target and BRU. No need to drive anywhere.
