Blood in diaper?!

Has this happened to anyone?

I found blood in LOs messy diaper when I went to change it this morning.

I'm assuming it's just because of the transition to WCM and off of formula completely earlier this week caused her system to "adjust." Not to be gross but her poop has really firmed up as a result in the last couple days (it always had been super runny all along.)

I asked my MIL (she's a former nurse) and she agreed with me basically saying tshe's using muscles and "toughening up" down there.

I'm not worried it's a dairy allergy or anything like that (she's had dairy all along with no issues, including some milk). I also think there'd be other signs if there was an allergy too.....but it's still a little freaky.

LO isn't otherwise sick. She's acting perfectly normal and happy as can be. Didn't seem to bother her in the least.

We go to the pedi on Tuesday so I'll ask then just to be sure.

Re: Blood in diaper?!

  • Could it have been from a fissure?  She may have just strained too hard since her poop was harder.

Another question, are you POSITIVE it was blood?  What did she eat yesterday?  Some things look like blood in poop, but aren't.

    Yeah, I'm assuming fissure too.

I'm pretty positive it's blood. I didn't feed her anything red yesterday at all, but she had lunch at the sitters and I forgot to ask what they fed her. So it's why I'm not over worried. We'll see if it happens again. Usually when red food comes through, I know. This just seemed different to me.

I would be have to agree with Katie on this one. It could have been a fissure, but I would just continue to watch her bm's to see if it were to happen again.

I think that it's safer to have bright red b/c it means that it's likely just a sore inside the rectum whereas if it's dark it likely means there is something going on in the stomach or intestines.

    I agree with this.

Thanks! I read that and my MIL confirmed it.

This was like bright red streaks. Totally obvious.

I'll just leave it be for the weekend and see if it happens again.

If she wasn't acting fine, I might care more, but like I said, doesn't seem to matter to her.

  • Does the blood appear to be "in" the poop or just on the outside. Like katie said, it could be just from straining. I am imagining it to be like when my patients come in thinking that they are bleeding to death, but it turns out being just hemorrhoids. I imagine any blood in the diaper would be scary, but it is probably nothing.

I am so not an expert but I have always heard there is a difference in red blood in stool and dark/black blood. I think that it's safer to have bright red b/c it means that it's likely just a sore inside the rectum whereas if it's dark it likely means there is something going on in the stomach or intestines.
this is very true. Black, tarry stool is more indicative of a GI bleed. Bright red blood (unless large amounts) is usually more superficial.
