Ferber followers

So we've been doing the ferber method for a little over a week. It started great, DS would be asleep just after a couple min. Now he takes longer, longest being like 20 min.

I think that he is associating his room with this, everytime we walk in there he gets upset. When I go to put him in his crib, hes crying before I even lay him down. I dont want him to hate his crib. I also have noticed, since we've started this method, he cant stand being alone. He's starting to scream when I walk out of the room. I'm not sure what to do.

Any suggestions?

  • The not being alone thing might not be the Ferber. I'm not using Ferber but DD screams when I walk out of the room now; she never did before last week.  It might be an age thing?

  • My son is the same way.  He got to the point that he was physically getting ill when we got near the crib.  He has a couple toys in his crib and he either  plays himself to sleep or DH stays in there rubbing his back until he falls asleep.  Cleaning up puke every time we tried to put him in the crib was too much.

  • We did Ferber, but things got better, not worse (though there were occasional difficult nights)! She usually goes down without a peep now, for naps and bedtime. I don't have any advise, if it were me, I would keep at it for a little bit and if it didn't get better, I would probably try something else.

Good luck! Sleeping is one of the hardest parts of parenthood, IMO.

  • It may not be the right time to try and introduce this, smilelari might be able to help you out, I think she has a post a while back about when it was not ideal to sleep train a baby.

6-8 months is supposed to be a good time for sleep training.  I don't like sleep training before 1 year of age, but that's more for my own reasons than anything

If it werent for my back I probably would wait as long as possible to sleep train. Prior to Ferber method the only way DS would sleep was to bounce, then lay him in the crib, pat his bum and "shhhhhhh" for what felt like an eternity. leaning over the crib like I was doing was killing my back. I know I'm going to lower his crib soon, and there would be no way I could go on the way I was doing it.
