Two Under 2

Pros and cons of 2 U 2

Me and my husband are trying to figure out what to do. Me and my sister are 23 months apart and have been close my whole life and I loved it! At one end I'm thinking my mom did it I can do it too, I would love for my child to have a playmate. Then, I'm thinking no way in the world.. You'd have to check me into a mental hospital if I got pregnant tomorrow. Just kidding.. Kind of. Maybe it's because my girl is only 2 months old and is still a DIVA, or maybe the amnesia hasn't set in yet. :) we are either going to wait a few years or have one in the near future. So tell me... If you could do it again.. Would you have 2u2? Is it so hard or is it a grind your teeth and get through the tough years because it will be worth it kind of thing? Thanks ladies!
I give up on trying to make a ticker.... this new bump format is for the birds...

Re: Pros and cons of 2 U 2

  • I *think* 2u2 is one of those things where you start out putting in a LOT of work, but the reward down the road is totally worth it. Of course, this is my hope at least. Right now I think it is hard but slowly getting smoother (if only the little one liked to sleep as much as the older one does). But I think you can only go up from where I was on DH's first day back to work - he came home to find me in tears, two babies screaming right along with me as I told him, "This isn't fair, they know I am by myself and they are ganging up on me!"

On the plus side, if you do 2u2, there is a solid chance you could have 2 kids who nap, maybe even at the same time so you get a bit of a break. On the down side, you have two kids who need a lot from you, even if they are good at entertaining themselves.

  • If I could do it again, I would, but that's what works for my family.  I've worked hard to have "easy" babies, routines, schedules etc (all of which I did even with one  child) so now it's a matter of enjoying all the work I put in.  I don't think it's a "grind your teeth and get through the first years" thing, it's more of a "hit the ground running" kind of thing meaning if you are prepared, you will probably do well.

That being said, at 2 months PP I was NOT ready to have another, around 6 months is when I felt that we were ready to add another LO to the family.

  • I wouldn't trade things for the world now, but we would not have 2u2 again.  It's been very hard for us.  For us, I think a larger age gap would be better, but we are on the fence about #3.

  • Although I can't speak for how it is with two "outside babies" I can tell you my thoughts so far. LO#2 was a little of a surprise, DS was only 4 months old when we got pregnant.. And although we were aiming to have them close, I wasn't mentally prepared for it. I was lucky to have a super easy pregnancy ( thus far), and having DS kept me really busy and made it go by quickly. I am SO glad to be having another already because I look at how much DS has grown in this last year and it just amazes me, he isn't a baby anymore.

We will probably wait two years or so before getting pregnant again, I want to raise these two for awhile and just enjoy them. Then maybe do another 2U2 grouping.

  • I think since your LO is only 2 months old it would be more like 2u1. Why not wait a few months and then think about whether you want 2u2?
  • I think a lot of it depends on your personality and your babies. It's been much easier for me going from 1-2 than it was going from 0-1. DS#1 was a tough baby (bad sleeper, cried all the time). DS#2 has been the exact opposite so far so it's been great having 2U2. I imagine had DS#2 been like his older brother, I'd be singing a different tune.

  • Mine are 21 months apart and I love it!!!!  Way easier than I ever anticipated.  If you have family or friends nearby to help (I don't) then it'd be even better.  Not sure if I'd want them less time apart but I love this age difference and know it will keep getting better!!!!
