Feel Like an Awful Mom

LO and I went on a walk, she was in the stroller, and things were ok until we were about a mile or so away from the house. Then she lost it. I couldn't make her happy! She cried the whole way home and now she's hoarse. I feel terrible, like I let her down. I need to be able to get out of the house, but even though she was fed ahead of time, in a clean diaper, dressed weather appropriately, etc., it was game over.

  • The first time is always the hardest. It gets easier, if never easy. Sometimes, they're inconsolable. Just soothe her the best you can. She'll know you're there for her if nothing else. And, she'll forget it happened, I promise.

  • Do you use the travel system type stroller (like where LO is in the carseat?) My LO hates his carseat so he will only tolerate it for a little while even if its in the stroller..we have much better luck if I'm wearing him, maybe try that?

That happened to us once. We left a friend's house and walked home thinking that he was good to go. Figured out about 10 minutes in that he was hungry and needed to be changed. He wailed the entire way home (1.3 miles) since there wasn't a place we could stop along the way to feed or change him. We felt like such horrible parents. Poor little guy, crying for 30 minutes straight.

I agree with the PP, try wearing your LO? Mine loves being snuggled close.

  • This happened to us in home depot! DH was wearing him and everything was fine, until the tile isle.  I took DS in the bathroom to change him and cuddle him a bit  and he was fine.  Then back in carrier, five minutes later, crying fit!!! I couldn't console him, DH couldnt console him, people were starring like they were about to call CPS on us!!

Babies cry and sometimes at very bad moments but that's life with a baby!  You're not abad mom because your baby cries!!

  • Dd is just starting to be ok with the stroller but really prefers to be worn on walks. And she doesn't like her carseat so we only use our lightweight stroller because it's rated for a newborn vs. the Bob which she can't sit up in yet.

  • Thanks. Right now she hates carriers because she wants to see everything.  Once she can support her head, we'll be all good. It just makes me feel terrible.  Her hoarse little voice kills me.
