Baby Names

Layne, Laine, or Lane

Lane for a boy or Layne/Laine for a girl. H is Korean and mn will be either Young (after his late father)or Kiyoung (combination of father and mothers name) Last name is two letters, starts with Y and rhymes with Lee. What is your opinion and how would you spell either the boy or girls name. Any other spellings I didn't think of. Girl nn is Lainey/ Layney. This is the only name we both like so far and H wants something Korean so his family in Korea have a name that has family ties. No matter what the fn is, his mother, who lives with us, will most likely call the lo by only the middle name. She may also have trouble pronouncing the L sound.

Re: Layne, Laine, or Lane

  • Not a huge fan of the name in general, but Layne looks way too you-neek. Please don't do that.

I like Laine. Lane I pronounce just as it's spelled, like a street, at first glance.

  • I really like Lane for a boy. I don't like it on a girl but I think I prefer the Laine spelling. If DH's Korean mother will be unable to pronounce and have to use the middle name anyway why not use a more feminine first name for a girl so you aren't so limited? Have you considered Elaine? You could use the nn Lainey as well.

  • Hi YIO!  Congrats!   I love Layne, probably because my sister's name is Elayna.  Also love Lane for a boy.

If formatting is wonky, it's my first post over here.

  • Love Lane/Laine for boy/girl!   Great name! (I'm a big fan of gender neutral, though, which I know isn't exactly popular around here)  DS's sitter is Elaine nn Lainey and we just love her, so I'm a big fan of Lainey as well.  Not really into Layne.

  • I would do either Lane or Laine, I would think Layne would be pronounced "Lay-nee" which I also like :)

  • Hi Cove. Thank you. I'm not a big fan of Layne either but H thinks it would be cute with the Y because of our last name starting with Y. I have a customer that spells it with a Y so I wasn't sure how it looked better.

Laine would be pronounced differently than 'lane' like the street? I thought that name was always pronounced just like "lane."

  • Lane for a boy, Laine for a girl. I think Laine/Lainey is adorable for a little girl.

  • I love Lane for a boy and Laine for a girl. It always makes me think of Lane Frost!! I'm not a fan of Layne, I thought that spelling was mostly used for a surname.

  • I like Lane and Laine but I prefer Lane.

  • I worked with a girl named Kiyoung and I do like that name. Layne is nice although I prefer a different spelling I can see your H's point of view with keeping the "Y's" going.

  • I definitely don't like Layne. It just seems like a random Y. I would go with Lane but I think Laine is okay too. I don't like the name on a boy. Even though I know it's unisex, it just rings more feminine to me.

I work w/ two ppl named Kyung and was told it's an extremely popular unisex Korean name. Do ppl in the Korean culture get offended of the combo names w/ diffn't spelling? One of my co-workers claims in her culture she does; traditional names only? Of course, it's your child I didn't know if this is something you should consider also.

To answer your question I prefer Lane & Laine.
