The below post got me thinking. If I drive my friends car and wreck it, won't my insurance be involved somehow? I'm curious about the situation below. If BM doesn't put SD on her insurance, but allows SD to drive the car they have, would BF's insurance end up having to pay since they insure SD?
It seems that this could be a very sticky situation.
Re: S/O SKs and car insurance
Insurance follows the vehicle first, driver second. If you drive your friends car and get into an accident, their isurance pays. If they do not have insurance (or its a major accident and the benefits are exhausted) then your insurance would pick up as secondary.
I haven't read the post you mentioned yet, but if someone is driving YOUR vehicle regularly they need to be on YOUR policy. Not adding them, especially in the case of teenagers, is cause to get your insruance cancelled.

A lot of it depends on the type of insurance you have and what State you're in. For example, I'm in CA and my husband and I both have full coverage on our vehicles. Anyone who drives our vehicles is insured because the car is completely insured, and in turn we are covered on any vehicle we drive (say we borrow my BIL's car). When the kiddos are old enough to drive they will be covered on our vehicles and have liability only insurance on their vehicles, but K wouldn't be covered by our insurance if she's driving BM's car. BM will be responsible for adding K to her insurance on her vehicle. Each State and insurance company is different on how they write up their policies.
