Fredalina or other ECers

I haven't been on here in so long, but I remember you said that your DD was out of diapers at 18 months.  We also EC'd from early on, mostly part time, and DS -- who is 19 months -- will now consistently use the potty by himself with very few misses.  However, the only way this happens is if he is bottom-less.  He doesn't seem to care if he's wearing a diaper and just goes in it.  We did try out having him in just shorts, and he tried to sit on the potty with them -- which is good, he didn't think they were a diaper.  But he doesn't necessarily let us know he has to go (he will sometimes grunt, but if you miss it, he doesn't keep doing it), and he clearly doesn't know how to dress/undress himself.

How do I transition out of this? Also, he hates when I put him in a diaper now (although, like I said, once it's on he could care less and just goes), but I feel like I can't venture out without a diaper yet.  How did it work for you? TIA!

  • That's a good idea, to practice with undies without actually wearing them quite yet.

Ok I have another question.  At nap and night time, did you wait until she was dry in diapers before you got rid of them?  DH has the idea in his head that DS doesn't pee in his sleep, that he wakes and then pees.  So that if we don't have him in a diaper, he will wake us to go (because he's so reliable at letting us know during the day ::eyeroll::). I'm not really eager to do the laundry to test this theory.

  • The way it worked for us was Ari just seemed to "get it". If I tried to push him at all, he regressed, so I just let it go. He went through a huge regression around 18-20 months. During that time we only offered the potty when we knew he would go or needed to - before sleep, after sleep, that type of thing.

Around 22 months he started asking to go or holding it more, & a month later he would tell us he just went or needed to go. Then he started asking to wear "big boy" underwear like daddy. We never really referred to them that way (wanting to stay away from big boy/baby type connotations), but whatever. I told him for at least 2-3 weeks that he could get underwear when he used the potty all the time. He wet through trainers like nothing so I didn't want to go to underwear. Then it finally dawned on me that he might be trying to tell me something, so we bought underwear. Gap Kids was the only place that had them small enough, & they were slightly big. Anyway, we had at least 1 accident per day for a week, after that they were only every few days & usually just a case of not making it to the potty in time. We went diaperless at night a month later (he still has to go potty @ night 1-2 times though, but we just take him), naps were pretty much immediate since he normally woke up dry.

  • We were similar to Fred and Webmistress.

We started ECing at 6 weeks. We went diaper free/naked on the bottom at home from about 14-15 months on. At first she would only go potty when we took her, then she started go by herself. Once she started going by herself we thought - oh cool, we can put training pants on her. But, like your LO, she would pee in trainers, undies and with pants on, no underwear. She treated them all like diapers. So she would pee on the potty if she was naked, but pee in anything she had on. At that time she could hold it for a long time too.

(she exclusively pooped on the potty from about 12 months on thank goodness.)

She also went through a regression at around 20 months and if you even mentioned the potty would freak out. But if you just left her naked she would go on her own. At one point she was also freaking out if you tried to put a diaper on her, or if she had a diaper if you tried to take it off. That was really frustrating. So we just backed off and followed her lead and tried to make it low stress.

Then, she just got it one day, about two weeks before her birthday. She has underwear in her dresser and I asked her if she wanted to wear it and she said yes. She's been wearing underwear or just wearing shorts/leggings since then and has only had a few accidents. We go out with her all the time and take frequent day trips. She naps without diapers and has been doing that a long time. She still sometimes wants to be naked around the house, so we let her.

We have contemplated going diaper free at night, because she is dry 80% of the time and we could probably take her to the potty once per night, but we are traveling soon and are going to wait until we get back from our trip to do it.
