Babies and swimming

How old does my baby have to be before I can bring him/her to the (chlorinated indoor) pool with me?

  • We've dipped DD in. She's 3 months.

  • This is a good question for your pedi, but we had DS in the water at 4 months with a bath after to get rid of the chlorine.

  • Indoor pool?

I thought sunscreen was 6+ months?

  • I would ask your pedi as well.  My pedi is fine with private pools (like if you had one at your house), but clearly did not like the idea of public pools.  She also didn't want us using sunscreen until 6 months because it hadn't been tested on babies younger than that.

  • My DS was about 6 weeks on his first trip to a pool. It was a pretty short dip in the water; but if you are into it, I'd say go for it when you feel ready. (Or with your pedi's approval)

I'd suggest good covering for him (hat, wet shirt) and/or shade to avoid the sunscreen issue already brought up. You may also be interested in reading about the trick of putting your baby underwater (whether you do it or not, it's interesting). I didn't do it early enough, but basically you can kick in their reflex to hold their breath by breathing in their faces.

  • We put our LO's in our pool when they were both 3 months.  They are little fishies!
