We're looking into buying a good camera to take pictures of LO (and other things of course). We have a basic digital camera but are looking for a better quality one. Any suggestions?
We have the Sony-NEX F3 (I think that's it). We also have a Sony Handycam Camcorder (I can't remember which model though, we bought the newest one that was out in 2008 for our wedding & honeymoon). MH is a Sony whore.

DH got me the Nikon 1 V1 and I love it. Takes great pics and is designed for those not fully comfortable with the capabilities of an SLR. I took the pic in my siggie with it while on vacation this past February

I love my Nikon D5000. It was one of those Costco deals and it's been awesome for me. The only downside is that it's a bit bulkier than a point-and-shoot, so it can be harder to fit into the diaper bag/backpack etc. But I find that when we go out, I'm mostly using it the whole time, so it's not the end of the world.

Hoping for a sticky baby!
We love our Cannon Rebel T3i. It is a DSLR that has a flip LCD screen - making it easier to capture little ones without laying down with them :P It is also super user friendly.

Agreed--- I shoot photos (part of my job) and that is always the camera I suggest to someone who see it as a valued hobby.
If you want to go more professional then the canon 60d is great.
I also have a Canon Rebel (xsi). I got a good deal on a refurbished one with a factory warranty. The shutter speed is amazing and I love my shots. I've been told by a photographer friend that for indoor portrait shots (like the ones of the baby!) I should really get an external flash. Currently, I just use the built-in flash and I have no problems with it.
We just got the Sony NEX-5N. It's called a compact system camera meaning that it basically has all of the features of a DSLR but is a little more user friendly and a little smaller (still expensive however.)
We were contemplating returning it and getting something more reasonable, but every picture that we take with this camera looks professional. And the ease of use mixed with the features is amazing. You can use the buttons/dials or do everything with the tough screen. The screen also pulls out and tilts so that you can take pictures over peoples' heads or down low to the ground. If you have the camera upside down to take over the head shots (the screen only tilts in one direction) the camera will recognize it and flip the image after it's been taken.
And the picture quality is amazing. I can't say enough good things about it!
For point & shoots, I *love* my Canon Powershot SX210. It has a good optical zoom (14x plus 4x digital zoom) and has a lot of extra features (the sales person described it as the point and shoot for DSLR people). I was at a football game last year in the end zone stands, and was able to take a close up photo of the center snapping the ball and it was super clear.

Canon Rebel, hands down. Reletively inexpensive for a DSLR, easy to use, and takes great pics!
I use it ALL THE TIME.
