I heart 90 min sleep program

I'm sure this has been brought up here before.  But holy moly that program rocks my world!  We've been using it about 2 weeks and my super fussy baby is much happier, STTN 8-9 hr stretches and 11-12 hr totals.  Not screaming and fighting sleep and naps...SLEEPING in the nursery  during naps in her RNP (she's still beside my bed at night), and just a generally happier baby.  It's amazing how much that program worked and makes sense! I just hope my MIL sticks to it when I go back to work next week!  If you have sleep problems and/or super fussy baby and not on a nap schedule yet.  Read this book.  DD isn't taking super long naps, but all in all everything is so much better!

  • What is it? Give it to us in a nutshell so I. Can think if I want to spend the $ for the book

  • I love it too - I started a couple weeks ago, and she is barely ever fussy.
    A - 4/27/12     D - 7/14/14
  • It if what I think it is - the baby is only awake for 90 minutes at a time during the day, sometimes less.

  • It's based on a scientists finding about a babies (and our) alert periods and when we're most productive/when we're more sleepy.  It basically is a fairly strict nap schedule where you allow your baby to be awake for no more than 90 mon at a time.  No matter how long she last slept, even after night sleep.  It talks about how important sleep is to make the awake periods more useful and the baby learns more.  Check out the reviews on amazon.  It's truly been a game changer for us.

  • And as dinabeth mentioned even less...some babies can't make it the full 90 min awake.  I start getting mine ready for naptime at around 70 min and she falls asleep quickly!
  • Do people attempt to keep their babies awake? I don't time J's awake periods, but I basically go by her cues, as does my mom (who watches her during the day). If she's sleepy, she sleeps. If she is alert, we do other things. I can tell by her eyes, if nothing else, when she is starting to get sleepy.

I didn't, but my baby doesn't give out good cues and wants to be wide awake all the time.  This really helped us follow a schedule.

    Thanks...I'll have to read it.

  • I'm really glad to hear that, I know you were having a hard time, and I'm glad that you found something that works for you!

Same here. My kids have always stayed awake longer than the recommended time, but they also take 2-3 hour long naps vs the expected 1 hour (according to what I've read). Every kid is different!

For sure! I'm not saying its for everyone, but if you were like me and tried everything with no avail....this is totally worth a shot!

    How long are her naps?

  • I haven't read the book, but DS2 is an absolute beast if awake longer than anything past an hour...MAYBE an hour and a half on good days. For his first nap of the day he is usually ready in 45 minutes, tops. For his last awake time of the day he can go 2+ hours, but that is it. I keep waiting for longer stretches so it is easier to go out and do things. DS1 was one of those kids who was awake all day, so this is foreign to me. Luckily he will still catnap in the stroller or carrier, so when we have to go out for DS1's activities he can fall asleep that way, but no more than 30 minutes for those naps, alas.

So far only 45 min to an hour.  But the book talks about the more she realizes what good sleep feels like she'll sleep longer.  We've only been doing it for a couple weeks.  AND shes not sleeping on top of me all the time, so I am happy!

This is how my baby is as well. I haven't read the book but I just naturally follow the guidelines I guess because as soon as the 1 hour mark hits I start trying to get her to go to sleep. If she's super alert and happy I let it go until 90 minutes.

  • I haven't read it but somebody explained it to me briefly and I started doing it weeks ago. Works great! If I wasn't watching for yawns and stuff I wouldn't even know she was tired because she still seems alert! But I put her down and she does sleep... If I miss the window she gets a bit crazy and it takes a lot of work to get her to sleep.

  • At this point I'll try anything.  And for $10, why not!

  • I didn't read the book, but I've been following the recommended awake times (also 90 minutes, just like the book) and would start to put her down, even after her long night sleep.....and aggie, just like you said, wonders!!!  She now sleeps through the night and is much less cranky during the day.  It' also easier to put her down for naps....and in her crib!!!! :)  We've been doing this for a month, month and a half, LOVE!
