What's worse than Target?

Ikea!

I spent far too much money at Ikea yesterday but did come home with a fabulous custom closet and some storage bins for the massive amount of kid toys.  Now we just have to put it all together.

Thankfully, the closest Ikea is in another state, so it's not a trip we make very often.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I almost have a breakdown in Ikea every time we go there.  I want to buy like 800 things, but then I remember what a PITA putting everything together is and how it won't look quite as cool at my house w/o all teh rugs, accessories and lighting that the showroom has.

Well that can be easily solved by just buying all the rugs, accessories and lighting too!

  • We went on Sunday and had to restrain ourselves.  The closest one is about 1.5 hours away so we tend to make a day of it - eat lunch there, etc.

At the check-out DH commented that we did better this time than on our usual Costco runs.  Those can add up really quickly for us!

  • Ikea is pretty awful, but since it's horribly inconvenient to get to, we don't go there too much.  I'd say maybe 2x/year.  We went in June to look around, and ended up with tons of random things (we really only wanted a napkin holder, for like $3!).  Then I decided I love the play kitchen for the size area we have, and I love their new corner desk...and I went back 2 days ago and bought those.  The play kitchen is for Christmas, so I just have to hide it until then...

Since that's not normally a splurge place for us (as bad as Target) I would say Costco is PURE EVIL.  But usually we're stocking up on things for the house.

  • Yum, swedish meatballs....  My "other Target" is Wegmans.  I'm bad, really really bad there...

  • I have not yet been...the closet is an hour away.  I am still trying to resist the urge (and I don't have time right now anyway).

Me too.  I've said I could easily live at either Target or Costco.  Ikea I don't have too much of a problem because while I love the stuff, it doesn't all go in my house and the sheer size is kind of overwhelming (we have the 2nd largest one in NA about 15 minutes away).

  • The only reasons I was not an ikea addict when I lived closer to one were:

    1. the carts. OMG they stress me out & I curse the whole time pushing them

    2. the lines. again OMG. But I tried to go on a weekday right when they opened which was not so bad.

But yes, you cannot get out of there w/out spending at least $100 more than you planned! AH!

  • I'm pretty good at Ikea, but we have a horrible time restraining ourselves at Costco.  Amazon is pretty bad too.
  • Agree, that's why I've had the ban on for a few years but am tempted to go again.  Glad that it's all the way south of the border :)

Sam's Club sure seems to take a toll on the pocketbook too.  Joined to save money and don't think I can leave the store without spending $300!

  • amazon for me.  it is way to easy to check out on there.

  • Ohhh, Ikea!  We go there sometimes just to let D1 play in Smallland and eat dinner.  Embarrassed

Thankfully we don't belong to any of the clubs - no Sams or Costco for us.

Wegmans is a good one!  I can spend a lot in the market part but the grocery's aren't extra expensive.

I'm taking DD to IKEA today.  Should be fun!
  • Yes, Ikea is a trap!  don't fall for their weekend deals either.  I did that once.  Didn't get the deal and walked away with $50 worth of stuff I never knew I needed.

So I hear. Thankfully our closest one is still 40 minutes away, not worth the trek to find out!

  • I go to Ikea maybe 2 or 3 times a year, and never really buy anything.

I dont' know, I always go in there with the best intentions to buy some things, and I am always like, meh.

I have found stuff every once in awhile, but its very hit or miss for me.  Plus it's kind of a pain to get to from my house, its only 10 miles, but traffic is awful and it can take 45 minutes to get there.

So for me, my biggest offender is still Target, by far.

  • Whole Foods.  That place is the worst.  I go in for less expensive milk, good produce and meat, and come home with $100 over and above the staples with specialty breads, cookies, etc....

  • Whole Foods - especially when I go on an empty stomach - I find all kinds of new things to try, and end up with WAY too much food and spending waaaay too much $$$.

  • I seriously limit my trips to costco to cash transactions because I will always see stuff I 'need' but didn't go there for. So I'll limit myself to $100. I like going to Ikea for chocolate bars and their cafeteria, but I never do find anything that I really want to buy. We're limited on space so buying any more furniture is not going to happen. Amazon has my cc info so it's so easy to 'shop' and put item after item into my cart. I also limit myself on that site!!!
  • I live 15 min from both a Target and Ikea, so both are money pits. I always end up eating dinner at Ikea too because it's so good and so cheap! We go almost every week to pick up little things here and there, but one time we scored our nursery  dresser in the as-is section!
