Special Needs

It's Wednesday and I'm bragging!

We're going through the evaluation process now that Chris is ready to transition from EI to pre-school special ed.  He had his speech and psych evals at the same time which I thought was a neat approach, then an OT, and no need for a PT since that service just got discontinued (it was determined he didn't need it anymore).

Just had a very nice conversation with the coordinator at the evaluation agency.  He did very well.  Cognitively, she said in some areas he scored what they call "low average" which is actually very high.  Funny - I never thought hearing "low average" would make me so unbelievably happy.

She then went on to give me a little preview of the reports we'll be getting saying some of his scores were very high so they're thinking of putting him in a class of 10 to begin but with a note that he should be moved to a 12 soon.  His biggest issues being in the social area but the center today told us he is making some good progress there and now acknowledges his peers and will even hand things to them during playtime.  (This is HUGE for him).

I'm so so happy.  Yeah he's got his "quirks" but I know that deep down in there is a very bright little boy and I'm so happy that the evaluators saw that.  That's actually what the coordinator said - "there's a very bright boy in there ..."  So many times, people don't see our kids - they just see the ASD.  They SAW my boy.  Yay!!
