Present for a 1yo girl (NTTGPR)

I could use some help ladies.  We are going to a friend's this weekend to celebrate the birthday of her little girl who is turning one.  Does anyone have suggestions on gifts?  What are one year old's playing with nowadays?  Any and all thoughts and suggestions are welcome!

  • If we don't really know the kid involved we tend to get books for them.

  • I was honestly thinking a doll or something.  Books never crossed my mind.  I was just gonna go into Toys R Us and browse the little girl section until something jumped out at me.  I guess I feel like kids grow out of clothes so quick I didn't want to get them something they may not even have time to wear.  This little girl is pretty spoiled.  She's the first grandchild on both sides.  :)

  • Alphabet books!  Both my girls love....still love them.  Bonus feature:  they learn their letters really well.

The best gifts my DS got for his 1st birthday were simple puzzles. Melissa & Doug are my favorites. There are some at Target.

Also, those my first words books are good.

  • Free night of babysitting and a gift card for the parents. The child doesn't need anything, but the parents would appreciate the time without worrying about child.

THIS!  My son loves his and he's 14 months old.  It's the best thing we can give him in the car to keep him busy and he now roars when he sees the picture of the lion.  It's awesome!

Melissa and Doug?  Is that a brand?  Or a type of puzzle?

It's called "Wookie The Chew" (Winnie the Pooh themed with Star Wars references)  I plan on having several prints for my nursery room!

  • Honestly when they are that young, I figure they get plenty of toys so I try to get them something that helps out the parents, like clothes.  Books are a good option too, I love to read so I plan on having a huge library of books to choose from my for kids one day.

  • The first word/color/number/alphabet books are great. You can get one of those & a gift certificate. :)

  • The last one-year-old birthday party we attended, we simply wrote a check to the mom (her DH died right after the kid was born) and put it in a card.  Other people bought toys and such, but how much does a 1 year old need? Meanwhile, the 1 year old princess slept in her pack n play.

I just have to say that I think it's ridiculous to even have a big birthday party for a one year old.  The party we went to had over 100 people there and they spent $2000 on just catering alone.  The only reason we went was to support the mom who had lost her DH. Ugh.... never again, though!

  • My son turned one in March.

We read about 6 books a day, so books are good.  I like the That's Not My... series, as well as anything by Sandra Boyton.  Also, I'm lusting after a good alphabet book as well as a good 100 first words book.

In the toy department, I *love* the B. You toys at Target and on Amazon.  We have the B. Wheeels (cars), B. One Two Squeeze (blocks), B. Parum Pa Pum Pum Drum (band in a box), B. Fish and Splish Boat (bath toys), and B. Zany Zoo (activity cube).  The drum is by far is favorite.  Toys are a nice way to go because they get bored with them every few months, and new toys can add up.

As far as clothes, and I don't mean to sound snotty, just honest, the Grandmothers shop incessantly for this child, so we own far more clothes than I could ever imagine what to do with.  At this point, I am thanking them and donating or consigning the clothes immediately.

HTH!  And what lucky friends you have to be so considerate of what to get.  :)
