DD HATES being worn : (

Hi there! I'm hoping to get some suggestions for how to improve our baby wearing experience. DD is one month and does not like being worn at all. Within a few minutes, she's purple-faced screaming : (

We have a Moby wrap and a pouch (not sure of the brand). With the Moby, we've just tried the front-carry, with a piece of fabric over each shoulder and DD in the middle(not sure if I explained that correctly, seems to be a common hold for newborns). Are there other holds that might work better? With the pouch, I just put her in a craddle hold. I've nursed her in the pouch, which she doesn't mind, but as soon as she's done she starts screaming.

She doesn't really like being held outside of the wrap or pouch either. She loves her bouncy seat though. Did anyone experience something similar with their LOs? Did you just keep trying? I don't want to keep forcing it on her because she gets so upset, and I don't want her to develop negative associations with it. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated!

  • When my daughter was really little, she needed to be moving in the carrier, and not just wandering around the house moving, walking at a brisk pace.  I'd put her in, walk quickly around the block, and then she'd either fall asleep or be calm and I could do chores or whatever around the house.

  • Are you getting the Moby tight enough?  I know when I first started using it I was nervous about it being too tight, but if it isn't tight enough the baby will sort of slouch and not be well supported.  So, maybe she is uncomfortable.  The Moby is tricky to get used to....at least I thought so.

My guy liked moving around a lot too.  Also, when are you putting her in?  When she's up and happy or tired and fussy?  That can make a difference.

  • thanks for the tips! I put her in when she's calm, but she starts crying soon after.  I'll try moving around with her more, maybe bouncing and see if that helps

  • It could be that she simply doesn't want to be worn.  Sometimes you just have to roll with the baby's preferences.  I want my DS to cuddle more, but he wants down. I just had to adjust.
  • Just lurking!  DD1 wasn't a huge fan of being worn either and wasn't a very cuddly baby.  When she was in there, I had to be out for a quick walk.  Only then would she fall asleep.  I didn't use it as often as I would have liked just because it was such a struggle.  Like a pp said, I just dont think she liked being worn.

DD2 is more tolerant of being in the carrier, but again she likes the motion. I can't put her in there and expect to get chores done.  She'll be quiet for about 5-10 minutes, then get squirmy/start crying unless I start moving a lot.  That said, she will fall asleep within 5-10 minutes if I'm out for a walk where I'm constantly moving.  I'm hoping she grows to like it more cause I'd rather wear her than plop her in a swing/ bouncy chair.

  • yeah, I think she's just not into it right now. I was sort of feeling like an AP failure, but I just have to remember that all babies are different & if she's happier in the bouncy seat for now, that's ok. We'll keep trying it out though from time to time to see if her preferences change.

You don't have to wear your baby to be AP. The beginning is all about survival so if she likes then just roll with it.

At three months, I've just now started to wear DS. When he was born, I had a pouch carrier, he hated it. I bought a Baby K'tan, again, hated it. We had an infantino carrier that someone had bought us, I tried that about a month ago, and he seemed pretty happy. I didn't want to use it, as it's not designed well for him (or me - it wasn't very comfortable). I tried a carrier rental, and through the help of some on this forum, I ended up purchasing a Beco Gemini - I've had him in it so much the last few days, and he loves it.

I would say keep trying every couple weeks, and if possible try some different styles.

  • And try to see if being outside helps! DS2 will scream until I can get us all outside, then he settles in and enjoys the view and eventually will sleep. He doesn't like to be worn inside too often though. Both DS's needed lots of movement especially if they were sleepy... I got good at doing fast squats for a while (or bouncing on the exercise ball). Just keep trying little by little. DS1 went through a phase around 8 weeks were he wouldn't stay in the wrap unless he was sleepy... I just kept trying different holds, etc. He still loves being worn (although usually only at naptime or if he's sick) and he's 2.5!

  • There are tons of different carriers, some babes like some more than others. As said by previous comments, some babies like to keep moving and make sure you're meeting the T.I.C.K.S.

Here's a pretty good post on why a lot of babies are calmer while moving: https://babycalm.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/the-fourth-trimester-aka-why-your-newborn-is-only-happy-in-your-arms-30/

But at the end of the day, if changing the carrier type or moving more or other things don't work, then maybe she just doesn't like to be carried just yet. :P
