This morning, just as I do every morning, I stood on a shoulder to shoulder packed subway car on my way to work. No one ever offers me a seat. And that?s okay, I don?t mind standing. I am blessed to be a very healthy, fit, pregnant lady. A few stops into my ride an elderly lady with a cane steps onto the train?no one offers her a seat!
I look down at the perfectly healthy looking 19-20 year old girl sitting in the priority seating spot and say to her ?don?t you think this nice lady should have a seat.? Dumb founded she says ?oh yes? and lets the nice lady sit down. Personally, I would be extremely embarrassed if a very visibly pregnant lady asked me to stand so an 80 something year old with a cane could sit down, but we will give this girl the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps she just hadn?t had her morning coffee yet and was not fully awake, thinking, and lost all her common sense. Or perhaps she was never taught proper manners.
A few stops later the seat next to the elderly women opens up, and the 19-20 year old quickly jumps in?not even thinking to ask me, the pregnant lady if I would like to sit down. Just as I was starting to feel like the world has lost all common decency, the most amazing thing happened. The train lurched forward and the gentlemen standing in front of the 20 year old spilled his entire iced coffee onto the seated young girl. I know its mean, but I couldn?t help laughing?.Karma is such a wonderful thing!
Re: Karma is AMAZING!
I am not from Boston, but find this very funny. I have never heard that ... but it is funny to me that a city could be known for such a rude trait.
I completely believe in karma!!!
I think you are right about this. People are so busy trying to not make eye contact, they are wrapped up in their ipod, kindle or newspaper and don't notice their surroundings. If at some point I have a hard time standing for a while, I will not hesitate to ask if I canhave someone's seat.
Remembering my angel baby, Ezekiel, 09/03/2011...you will forever be in my heart.
That's awesome! Karma FTW.
I have to give people in London credit - for the most part they're pretty good about giving me a seat. As other people said, usually when they don't, it's because they're not really paying attention.

I have only been into NYC a handful of times since I've been visibly pregnant and someone has offered me a seat every time. NYC gets a bad rap, but I've always found them to be so helpful to anyone who is lost or needs help using the subway, or needs a seat!
And that is awesome about that girl! woo hoo!
That is awesome! I still have trouble getting seats sometimes and usually it's when a car is packed with teenagers....what went wrong with them I don't know.
