Pregnant after a Loss

Is it worth taking Zofran?

My doctor gave me Zofran tonight. I've had nausea but not unbearable. It just makes me not hungry and all I can stomach is bagels and pasta... He told me I need more protein and gave me Zofran. Although I KNOW he wouldn't give it to me if it wasn't safe, part of me wants to remain as drug free as possible while PG. So, do you think I should take it and possibly be able to et more nutritiously or would you skip it and just deal? Thanks!

Re: Is it worth taking Zofran?

  • I would definitely take it and have been taking it as needed with this pregnancy. My SIL had horrible m/s and took it with all 3 kids, with 1 she was on a constant zofran drip and took unisom as well...all 3 kids are perfectly healthy.  I really think it is worth it to beat the nausea sometimes.  Although lately it has been less effective for me.

  • I think it's worth it in the right situation, although I find it odd that he prescribed it when you said the ms isn't so bad. Are bagels and pasta the only things you can keep down? I might try some diet adjustments first, but if the don't work, then I'd take it, since you and baby do need proper nutrition. I haven't personally needed to take it, but I know several people IRL that have, and it worked well for them. Good luck!

  • Well it isnt that bad ... Like I'm not throwing up a lot. I actually only threw up once wheni tried to eat eggs. Its just constant nausea and the constant feeling that I'm going to vomit especially when thinking about or looking at foods. Bagels and pasta are the only things I can seem to eat without gagging. So he said for me to be able to eat nutritiously I should take it...

I'm still taking it this pregnancy because I continue to have morning sickness - I waited probably too long before starting it (I got to the point where I couldn't even hold down water or crackers) because I didn't want to take something unnecessarily.  It sounds like your MD feels that the lack of nutrition is an issue which I think it understandable

  • I caved and took it for a few weeks even though I was not puking a ton. It really is fine and it helped me eat more normally. I will warn you that I was constipated as all get out though while on it.

The pregnancy before this one, the ms was pretty bad so my dr prescribed it. This pregnancy its been even worse, I do think it helped me esp in the morning's on my way to work in the car. But after taking it for a week straight the constipation was unreal. Now If I take it I also take some Delcolax as well. I say take it, it cant hurt!

  • I was trying to stay as med free as possible with this pregnancy too, but I was miserable. I wasn't throwing up a lot, but like you I was almost constantly nauseous. Zofran definitely helped me to eat better and I felt like a different person after I started taking it. Seriously, I wish I had started taking it much earlier. Good luck!

I was the same as you, but I finally caved and took it. It helped tremendously. He wouldn't give it to you if it wasn't safe. I only took it when the nausea got unbearable and I knew I needed to eat. I only ended up getting 1 refill of it and still have about half of the 2nd bottle left.

  • I wouldn't have been able to sleep at all (I always had nausea and vomiting at night) the past few months if I hadn't taken Zofran. It has been shown to be safe during pregnancy, but does have some side effects (such as headaches and constipation) so my advice would be to try it and see if it helps you at all or makes a difference.

  • Hell yes!!  Although, I was really sick and lost 10 lbs. in 2 weeks and couldn't really keep anything down without it.  Even with it I could mostly only eat carbs and I still got sick a lot of days even taking it 3 times a day.  The worst part of zofran was the constipation (sorry TMI) that came along with it.

I guess if I could eat and wasn't throwing up all the time I might not have taken it, but with how sick I was I had no choice.  I think we all have our ideal and then we do the best we can.  If there is a safe med that will help deal with very bad symptoms then I think it is okay to take it.

Now as soon as I came off zofran (gradually over a few weeks - I was off it completely by 21w) the heartburn came on and so I am now on zantac.  So from 1 med to another, but I couldn't really function without either of them.

  • Take it as needed but please get come Colace and take that too. Like PPs said, the constipation is crazy. I'd actually prefer being queasy all day because my stomach hurt so badly after Zofran. I took one on Sunday and immediately felt better but paid for it on Monday and Tuesday constipation-wise...Even with Colace. I drank a cup of coffee yesterday and felt awesome though. GL! I hope you get some relief!
