UPDATE: woke up to sick puppy

This morning H and I woke up around 5:30am to hear Rocky throwing up.  We got that all cleaned up, and the next thing we know, he had a really back accident all over the floor and there is blood in it.  I'm freaking out, waiting for 7:30am to call the vet.  We've had him almost two years and he's never had anything like this go on at all.  I hope it is just something he ate, but the blood really worries me.  He rarely  has an accident, so that is very uncharacteristic of him too.  Any dog owners have experience with this?  Could it just be a virus?  My mind is automatically thinking the worst like parvo or worms, but I really have no clue if these are symptoms of those issues.  He has been a healthy pet from day 1, the only time we go to the vet is for vaccines!

Update - took Rocky to the vet and good news is stool sample was negative, bad news he does have some sort of virus.  He got a shot of antibiotics and oral antibiotics for the new few days.  He had one more accident after we got home.  Vet said he could eat this afternoon, so I gave him a little food and he chowed down.  My puppy was hungry!  My carpets need a good shampoo'ing, but other than that I think we'll survive.

Poor Rocky!! I would definitely take him into the vet. It could be a number of things, but the only way to find out is to take him in. I have never personally experienced this with Max, but my friends dog had bloody stool and it was Colitis (irritable bowls) which is something that they were able to treat with a change of his diet. Hopefully the vet will say its nothing serious, sending positive thoughts to you and Rocky!

  • That sounds like it could be worms, my dogs had a bout with hookworms about a year ago. Could also just be some virus. I would take him to the vet so they can check a stool smaple and tell you for sure. If it's worms he'll just need a de-wormer, it's a super easy fix and they're better in no time!

One of the dogs had blood in their stool during that time and the vet didn't think it was a big deal, I think it can be a symptom of worms.

I hope he feels better soon!

  • If he's two years old, parvo really isn't too much of a threat to him. Adult dogs get sick but they can handle it much better than young puppies. Like others said, it could be a virus, it could be something he ate, who knows. I hope your vet is able to get you in soon so they can find out for sure. It's never any fun when your pups are sick :-(
  • Poor pup! I hope everything is ok. But I agree you should definitely get him to the vet to figure it out. Good luck!

  • I would definitely get him in to see the vet, but also just kind of take note of how his activity level seems otherwise?  Is he active, moving around, drinking water?

Lethargy is when I would start to be really concerned.

Let us know how he is doing after the appointment.
