My unhappy LO

I really wish I could figure out why my LO is so unhappy. He just seems like he's in pain and miserable. First we tried cutting dairy from my diet and that didn't work. Then we tried supplementing with formula thinking maybe he was still hungry and that just made him sleep more. So now the doctor has me trying reflux medication, but I don't think that's it. It seems he's the most upset before he poops, which wouldn't be such a big deal if he didn't poop constantly. Part of me is wondering if he's having to hard of a time processing BM and that maybe I'm being selfish by still nursing him when that could be whats causing the problem.

Has anyone heard of a baby not being able to handle BM or have any advice for me? I just want my son to be happy.

Re: My unhappy LO

  • He could just be cranky. Check out PURPLE crying and Dr Sears report on High Needs Babies. Colic can be caused by caffeine and gas causing foods in your diet. BM is easy to digest. My guess would be he just works really hard. Alien gets cranky right before he pees and once he does it's like ahhhhh and he relaxes. He actually falls asleep after a poo, and I have to wake him to change him.

Of all the thing they have cut from my diet caffeine has not been one of them. Guess I will try that one tomorrow.

  • And remember it takes awhile to be completely out of you system. Also are you on any PPD meds? My doc prescribed me the wrong type that transfers to BM and we figured out that was causing some fussiness besides the reflux and colic. Switched meds but the old was in my system for at least a week he said. The reflux meds also take a few days to help, but zantac did nothing for my babies, we use prevacid. And we feed them sitting up and leave them in a chair for 30 min after eating to help with the reflux. They also sleep in their carseats at night (unfortunately!) but they sleep. GL cranky babies are no fun!

  • A lot of babies with dairy sensitivity are also sensitive to soy products.  Our girl was having the same issues and it was dairy; i just posted about our misery a few days ago. My BM is just now starting to not bother her as much and its been 2 weeks. The ped id it could take up to three for both of us...have you tried gas drops or gripe water?

  • I'm not on any meds and we have tried gas drops and gripe water. When I cut dairy they had me cut soy but I possibly could have missed something. One thing I guess I should mention is he sleeps great at night. He wakes up to eat and goes right back to sleep and at night he doesn't fuss at all. It's weird you would think if something was hurting him it would hurt him at night also.

  • If it isn't at night it sounds like over stimulation not a tummy problem.  I would try cutting all extra noise and activities out for awhile.  Also I know my son does not do well if he's held all the time he likes some alone time to play or sleep in his pnp when I hold him a lot he gets very fussy.
