so we're sleep training E using the sleep lady shuffle. we are doing surprisingly well so far. the first night, she cried 17 minutes and tonight she cried 14 minutes. none of it was the hysterical type of crying, which is what i was bracing myself for.
per the shuffle, DH is sitting next to the crib the entire time so that she does not feel abandoned. he gets to soothe her and pat her and if she goes hysterical, he will pick her up. after 3 days, he will move farther from the crib, and then the following 3 days, he will move out of the room. it is supposed to be the gentlest form of sleep training, but it does take longer than ferber or pure CIO.
i think it also helps that we are training now at 6 months. according to the book "bedtiming" 6 months is the best time to do it because it will affect them the least emotionally and they are in a good place developmentally to learn how to sleep. although E's sleep was horrible since 4 months, i waited it out because i wanted to minimize as much distress as possible.
so, we'll see if this thing really works! crying a little is one thing...learning how to fall asleep independently is another!
