Just now starting crossfit?

Hey ladies!  Just wanted to see if any of ya'll could share your thoughts and experience on this.

I'll be 25 weeks pregnant tomorrow, and from the start of my pregnancy, I've kept up walking, the elliptical, lifting lighter weights and doing some of the weight machines at the small neighborhood gym, but it is getting soooo boring.  Before my husband and I moved from Houston, i had a personal trainer who was awesome and kept the workouts interesting. We moved to a little bitty town in Arkansas and there isn't a "big gym" anywhere close to us.

I was talking to my sister who is a CrossFit trainer, and she suggested that I check out crossfitmom(dot)com and start out with some of the beginner workouts and WOD's.  Looks do-able!  And I found out that there's a CrossFit that is only 3mi from where we live, so I just might have to join after the bamnino is born!  Anyway, wanted to get some of your thoughts on starting the beginner (aka modified) crossfit workouts on my own this late in the game.

Thanks!

If you have been active all along (which it sounds like you have) you should not have any trouble starting the Crossfit Mom WODs. You may find that the beginner workouts are not challenging enough and want to progress, just listen to your body and you should be fine. I am pregnant with my second now and worked out until the day I went into labor with my son (including Crossfit), it made my recovery SO easy that I am back on track with the same goal this time (average 1 workout a day for the entire pregnancy). One caveat would be to make sure you have good form if you have not done some of these movements before, you may even want to start at the Crossfit gym now to get the coaching.

    Good luck!

  • Agree with the PP, the great thing about Crossfit is that it is all scaleable.  You just have to listen to your body and know your limits.  Maybe see if the Crossfit gym near you has experience with pregnant members.  My gym has had quite a few, so the trainers are pretty used to coming up with modifications at this point, plus I've learned what works and doesn't work for me so I often times come up with my own modifications without having to ask.

  • you should be just fine...and maybe even able to scale up a little bit from beginner for a few weeks.  I'm now 6 days out and still TRYING to do the advanced amounts but now typically lighter weights.  It was smooth sailing til about week 36/37 then i did have to modify/drop weight.  I was a crossfitter before though, too.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I decided to go for it and right now am doing the crossfit mom WOD's three times a week and am LOVING it!! Can't wait to join the CrossFit gym after the baby comes!

  • I would second the suggestion to check out the gym while you're PG. I worked out at a xfit gym through my PG til week 36. I had a little bleeding, and my midwife and DH requested I stop (did 80 pull-ups that day... highly modified, of course). Anyway, I really enjoyed the social time and it was useful to have the trainers' input. I had a tough time working out on my own, though. Just a thought!
