Just wondering if anyone else has thought about this...

What will you use to bathe baby? I have become obsessed with checking the environmental working groups cosmetics database. I want to use something thatis safe and is readily available at a store (meaning i dont have to order it online) and something that wont cost an arm and a leg.

I have been leaning towards California Baby products or Burts Bees baby bee fragrance free shampoo and bodywash because they sell it at Target and BRU and its not as harsh as typical drug store brands.

  • All the time with DS. I don't like Burt's Bees; I like the way it smells but didn't like how it felt on his skin or hair. And I hate the way California Baby smells. I keep meaning to try Earth Mama Angel Baby. Mustela also gets good reviews. Readily available in a store is pretty inconsequential to me. Diapers.com has really fast shipping as does Amazon prime and the less time I have to spend in a store, the better. But that's just me.

  • We use aveeno baby fragrance free.

  • Yes. We are using Gaia all natural baby wash. The smell isn't too strong, a light orange scent and it is organic and soap free. It worked well with DS so we plan to use again. The only problem is since we moved it is not so readily available and we need to order it online or drive an hour and half to get some.

I haven't tried Burts Bees but my SIL did and wasn't crazy over it with her son so I'm a little leary.

  • We really like the California Baby bubble baths and the Method Baby body wash/shampoo for DS.  He's got really sensitive skin, and actually reacts to the Burts Bees body wash/shampoo, so that's out of the question for us.

  • We've used Aveno fragrance free with DD and have had great results. Her skin is super sensitive and we've found this to work best. Tried Johnson and Johnson for about a week and just didn't like it. She didn't either. We use Cetaphil lotion per our pediatrician (it significantly helps reduce the chance of eczema, which runs in the family).

  • We also use Aveeno Baby. In the beginning we used the fragrance free stuff for eczema, but DS's skin isn't as sensitive so he's using the regular Aveeno shampoo and wash. I like the smell :) Johnson & Johnson products were really not very good for his sensitive skin, even though I do like the smell of the shampoo also.

  • As of right now, Johnson and Johnson but I also want to check out Burt's Bees and Aveeno.

  • I figured I would use Johnson & Johnson. It's widely available and it's what my mom used with all three of her kids. We turned out all right. :)

  • I'm still using brands I got for my baby shower, almost 2 years ago! I still have another bottle or 2 left as well. We got Johnson & Johnson, Aveno, and some off brands. DS doesn't have sensitive skin, so we are able to use it all. I really don't have a preference but like the smell of the lavender ones the best.

We use California Baby.  There are concerns over the chemicals used in Johnson and Johnson so I would encourage those using it to do a little google research on it.

  • Since I'm allergic to fragrance, it won't matter how sensitive baby is. Mom can't handle washing unless it's fragrance and dye free! I use shea butter soap on myself, so I'm going to try that on my child. And for moisturizing I use shea butter or almond oil/cocoa butter on myself, so ditto for the kid. Shampoo will be interesting. I get my hair done at the beauty shop, and finally they found something that doesn't make me itch. I'll have to see what I can do for my child - it won't be beauty shop brand though. Perhaps I'll try aveeno.. it's just that the last time I used Aveeno, it enhanced my eczema..

  • We're going to use Aquaphor's Gentle Wash and Shampoo.  I always had horrible eczema problems and allergic reactions to stuff as an infant, so we're not taking any chances with LO.

I'm thinking of Lavanila Baby kit (sold at Sephora) or the Mom and Baby Shea Line from L'Occitane :)

(a little expensive...but worth it IMO)

This is what I was going off of by askng this in the first place. Because its not ingested, it isnt regulated by the FDA, but it contains high levels of carcinogens. The company can do a voluntary recall and change their formula just like they did in the UK, but they havent changed anything about it yet. Therefore, I boycott J&J altogether, and that includes Aveeno. Anything with fragrance or anything considered "tear free" is very harmful. Checkout the website i mentioned before

  • I use Aveeno fragrance free becuase my son has sensitive skin.  But oh man, do the Mustela products smell soooo good! I would not recommend the J+J: they were very thick, scented and kind of gross to me.

  • We love Burt's Bees. Soft, buttermilk smell (although they have recently only offered the more mild, almost scent-free in my stores, but it still works great). I have had eczema all my life and I wanted to be proactive with my little ones...used it on my first baby (almost 15 years ago!) and more recently my five year old. We use it everyday and have had NO problems. Trial and error works....you should notice if baby's skin doesn't like it quickly! Hope this all helps. Good Luck:)

I use Eurcerin Aquaphor. It does not have the amazing baby smell and is not at every store. I usually buy it in 3 packs on Amazon.

LO has my extremely sensitive skin. She gets little bumps all over like I do and they can turn red and almost look like pimples. When they get like that they hurt. My pedi called it Keratosis Pilaris. It didn't have a name when I was a kid!

I have always used Eucerin lotion which seems to work the best for me so I was thrilled when I found out they made baby wash and shampoo.

I used Johnson and Johnson the smelly good stuff for about two months and realized it was only making her skin worse and my pedi said no more scented stuff on her skin.

He did advise I try Amlactin lotion on her and myself. In winter it is not as bad so I just had not gotten around to getting it but since we have hit summer her skin has gotten worse so I am getting that today to see if it helps

Oh and until I was allowed to give her a real bath I used the mustela water free wash and that seemed to be ok on her skin. I mean I really only used for about a week or so until I could give her real baths. Then I just kept it for cleaning her face and neck so she didn't smell like spit up all the time :)

  • Somebody recommended Green Baby to me, so I'll try that to start.  Not sure if that's only available here in the UK though.

  • I have been using the Dr. Bronner's magic soaps for a while and they have a baby line I would be willing to try out.
  • We used California Baby for everything initially.  Although, I think they've changed something with their body wash, because it seems different than it used to.  At this point, we're just using it for his hair, and for his body we use a bar of unscented Dove soap.  My husband I use the unscented Dove bars as well, and so it's easy to just buy a large pack to keep on hand for whenever we run out.

I stay away from J&J products as much as possible.

  • Check out https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/, it will tell you about ingredients.  It is extremely scary what is in these products we are laying on our skin.  The site allows you to search most products and you will see the safety rating.  As a previous poster said I would research J&J natural products as they do still have some harmful chemicals.  I will be using Adorable Baby Body Wash by Loving Naturals when DD arrives, it has the best rating on ewg.org and if you check out with the Amazon option shipping is free.  Good luck!

  • I've used Cali Baby since DS was born and it's been great. Despite having sensitive, fair skin, he's never had baby acne, eczema, or any other skin concerns.

I do wish it had a better "baby" smell. I mean, the lavender and eucalyptus smells nice, but it's not a "baby" smell and it fades so fast. I do love that Johnson & Johnson baby smell that lingers. cest la vie.

  • There are several brands (Johnson & Johnson and Aveeno to name a couple) that have been rumored to cause children to test POSITIVE for marijuana/THC. There was a huge controversy about it in the news recently. I would either do some research or avoid those brands.

...It was specifically their bedtime/night time, sleepy stuff.
