March 2013 Moms

terrified of a miscarriage!

I just got my BFP last week and I should be due around March 13th!  I am so excited!  This is my first pregnancy and it's been to hard to keep this a secret.  My whole family knows and a few friends.  Now that it is sinking in that I really am prego, I am so terrified of having a miscarriage!  The only symptoms I have had so far are cramps, which I had no idea that was even an early symptom and thought I was miscarrying all ready.  Does anyone have any words of wisdom to calm me down or is anyone else feeling the same way?

Re: terrified of a miscarriage!

  • Symptoms don't indicate your level of pregnancy so don't feak out about your symptoms changing.

And there isn't much you can do to prevent a miscarriage unfortunately.  Just wake up every day and think "Today, I am pregnant and I'm thankful for that"

This. No matter how much you worry, things will turn out the way they were meant to. Try to enjoy it :o)

  • I know, I feel the same way.  I'm in my 20s, fairly healthy, and have never had a MC before, but every time I feel something in my abdomen, it freaks me out for a moment.  Of course, it's usually just gas because I'm SO FREAKING GASSY lately (tmi).  Anyway, I think this is a really common fear, but at the end of the day, there's nothing we can really do about it.  And unless you're smoking/drinking/etc, your chances are fairly low (*knock on wood*).  At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

But seriously, I've been knocking on wood almost constantly since I got my BFP.  Who knew I was that superstitious?

  • My last pregnancy ended in miscarriage, and I really robbed myself of all enjoyment and excitement during my pregnancy because I was too freaked out about something going wrong. My only advice is try to enjoy every second as much as you can. The odds are in your favor that everything will go well, and I truly hope it does for you. GL!

  • This is my first pregnancy & i just found out too! im also due around the same time! i'm also EXTREMELY nervous about miscarrying & have had cramping like you described! even as i'm typing right now but i read that it seems to be pretty normal & its just your uterus stretching & growing to make room for the baby. I've also read alot of other posts on cramping so check it out to give yourself some relief! try not to stress i'm sure everything is A-OK!

  • Thank you all for the encouragement!  I'm anxiously awaiting my first doc appt July 30th!  We were TTC for about 6 months and I'm just so excited this is all actually happening!

You're not a jar of pasta sauce, you're pregnant.  (sorry pet peeve)

Pregnancy and motherhood is exciting and terrifying at the same time.  The odds of you having a miscarriage is not nearly as likely as you having a healthy child.  It is difficult to not worry, we all do but try taking it one day at a time and enjoy yourself.

Very gently put - and well thought out. Also, all true. Thank you for being so tactful, "daylights1". Some people can be too blunt about it and can be misinterpreted, especially on posts. So hard to read people's emotions without seeing faces.

  • We're due around the same time! I just found out last Sunday :) It's my first and I just want everything to be okay, but I can't help freaking out about every little cramp. I just keep telling myself that it's FAR more likely to have a healthy pregnancy than it is to miscarry.

I've been experiencing cramps for the past two weeks-very mild, but still there. I totally understand how you feel, but just try not to worry yourself too much!

  • Worry is inherent in parenthood.

You worry about m/c.  Then you worry about having a stillborn/PTL.  Then you worry about SIDS.  Then you worry about infant milestones.  Then you worry about if they have a motor or speech delay.

I'm sure as they get older, we'll worry about socialization, grades in school, and so on and so on.

I'm sorry to be so negative, and there are so many wonderful things in parenthood, but you'll never stop worrying.  It's a double edged sword.

  • It's absolutely normal to worry about miscarriage. Seeing the world as we have, it is almost instinctual to imagine worst case scenario- prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Also, we hear about miscarriage stories all the time, so naturally we are acutely aware of the possibility. Something that needs to be considered is that, while quoted rates of miscarriage may seem high (I've heard as high as 25%), that still leaves the majority of pregnancies that end up sticking. I mean, apply those odds to another situation. If you're one of 16 candidates being interviewed for a position, and they will end up hiring 12 people out of that pool, don't you like your odds?

Also, as PP have said, there's so little a mother can do about mc this early. I keep telling myself that, so long as I'm doing everything I can, I just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. It would not necessarily lessen the pain if I did mc, but it would help to know that it wasn't necessarily my fault.

  • take it one day at a time. There is nothing you can or cannot do to prevent it. If it's going to happen its going to happen. Im terrified but you live day to day and every day there is no bleeding I tell myself today I am pregnant, today i love my baby. Tomorrow is another day. Try and relax. Extra worrying won't help. Gl

  • I was like this with my first and still feel like this now.  My baby is only 8 months old and we didn't expect to get pregnant with my first pp cycle.  It's a little surreal and too good to be true.  But you have to stay positive and believe that everything is going to be okay.  Trust me you will make yourself crazy with worry.
