daytime sleeping

So, how much are babies actually supposed to sleep during the day at this point? I feel like I just have sleepy girls.

Today Claire got up at 7:00, ate, was asleep again by 8:30, was up again at 9:30 & ate at 11, was asleep at 11:30, up again at 12:00, and asleep again at 12:20 in her bouncer where she's still snoozing.

Etta was up at 7:30, ate, was asleep in the swing by 9:15, up again at 10:00, ate at 11:15, was asleep at 11:30, up again at 12:00, and asleep by 12:20 in her bouncer where she's also still asleep.

Their biggest awake period was when I did the laundry photo shoot. I sometimes wonder if they just fall asleep a lot because of the way I have to park one while I feed the other? So they end up crashing out while waiting on me to feed sister, instead of staying awake because I could play with them or something?

Re: daytime sleeping

  • Babies at this age should only have about 90-120 minutes of awake time between  naps, so it sounds like your girls are on track.  They're supposed to extend their awake time between naps to 2-3 hours sometime between 4 and 6 months.  This is when a more structured, three naps a day pattern will emerge (morning, afternoon and early evening naps)

  • i feel like my kid sleeps all the time lately. we woke him up at 7 to eat and drop daddy off at the train, he was back down at 7:30 until 9:45, ate around 10 and went back to sleep at 11:30 and is still sleeping at 3:30. when he wakes i will feed him but generally he will take another hour nap between 5:30 and 6:30 and will be asleep for the night between 7:30 and 9:30 (big variance). i feel like we never get time to play except a few minutes here and there. cant wait for him to be awake longer stretches.

  • Patella gave a good answer.

Here's Graham's sample day: up at 7, nap from 8:15-9:15, nap from 11-12, nap from 2-3, catnap 4:30-5:15, down for bed by 7:30.

However, and this is where he differs from your girls, I have to actively put him down for naps when he starts giving sleepy cues. He never ever just falls asleep unless we're in the car or I'm wearing him.

Yes we need to do this too now.  Or if they are just exhausted.  We went to a BBQ on Saturday -- got there in the middle of one of their naps, I thought they'd keep sleeping.  Nope, but they were happy.  We fed them on schedule and they hung out a bit and 15 minutes later Gabe fell asleep in my arms lol.

My sister assumes babies will just sleep when they're tired........not quite the case........

I usually don't let LO go past 90min w/o a nap.  My pedi said she should be sleeping around 5hrs a day and 9 at night.  I can tell you I don't get 5hrs worth of naps during the day though.

  • I only get about an hour of awake time between naps, and 1.5 hrs. only once a day.

I think that at 3 months they average about 13-16 hours a day of sleep. DD does a consistent 14-14.5 hours...about 10 straight at night, a 2 hours nap and a couple cat naps

  • DD sleeps a lot too. It is what they need. She isn't up for more than 2 hours at a time. I usually start trying to get her to go down an hour and a half from when she wakes up.

  • Thanks everyone! Good to know they're normal and not like, insanely sleepy. I tend to just follow their lead, and I guess I'll keep it up.
