So after persuading my husband that we need to call EI, he finally agreed on Saturday that we can call and have them come out for evaluation, but if they find nothing wrong than I can't keep bringing it up. I agreed and called this morning and she explained someone will be calling me this week to set up the appt. Now I am starting to freak out, I am afraid what they're going to tell us, and now my fears that there may be something wrong are starting to seem real. My reasons for calling are, he isn't crawling on all fours, he has just started army crawling, but when you place him on his hands and knees he just collapses as if he cant support himself, he's not sitting up on his own, if I put him in the seated position he'll sit there but can't get to sitting from lying down. He doesnt pull himself to stand or cruise, he will stand if holding on to something but only if you put him there. He hasnt said mama or dada, he babbles constantly but no definite consonant sounds. He is the happiest baby and I think it's more so his moto development that concerns me and really I'm find until we're around other babies and that's when I start to see the differences. Hoping that I'm just over reacting and he's fine and if so I'll feel so much better.
Re: Just called Early intervention...freaking out
We did occupational therapy for food aversion with DD. the eval was easy.... The OT came to our house played games with DD and for us had us prepare food she would eat and wouldn't, also brush her teeth and look at her gag reflux. DD had issues with food (anxiety and only wanting purees at 18 months).
The OT wrote a report and we started therapy. We saw Huge results with only a few sessions and didn't need a continuous therapy.
I will say that it is very very common for babies to be late walkers and any movement (scooting, army crawling, crawling) is what professionals look for...not just "traditional on-all-fours" crawling. Also they look for babbling until 18 months not talking! DD only said one word at 16 months but she babbled so they didn't see it as a problem. She now speaks 5+ word sentences.... Her language leap was 18-24 months . My nephew never babbled as a baby and after he learned a word he would stop or loose the word and he needed extensive speech therapy.
Every baby develops at a different speed. It sounds like he's on track, just on a later track. My son was a very early crawler, but he still prefers his alligator scramble (we think it's a better description than army crawl...he does look like a gator from behind) to a traditional crawling position. It took him 2 months before he could really get up on all fours and even then, he'd fall forward because he hadn't built up his skills yet.
Anyway, so his progression went like this: rolling over both ways>>sit on his own (if we put him in that position)>>fall forward to army crawl>>hold himself up with some mommy/daddy help (if we pulled him up, he'd stay there)>>>sit up from laying down and back>>pulling up on everything and falling down>>crawling on all fours>>pulling up and squatting back down. All this took like 5 months. There are a lot of mechanics involved
The constant jargon babbling lasted a good 6 weeks before he said Mama and Dada.
If you're worried, you should get him checked (of course), but honestly, it sounds like he's on his way....If it makes you fell better, I rolled everywhere until I was 15 months...and there's nothing wrong with my walking skills
I'm kinda glad I decided to check out this board today.... I just want to try and ease your fears a little bit. I'm not saying that I would know for certain what is going on with your baby or that you shouldn't get him checked out with EI.... But my LO didn't even start army crawling until about 2 weeks before her 1st birthday. She still is not crawling on all 4s, although she can get up on them, but drops down as soon as she wants to move. She only started going from lying to sitting after she really started moving around more, and not until after she was a year. AND she JUST, I mean within the last 2 weeks, started pulling herself up to stand at the furniture and has not yet started trying to cruise along them, although she does try to pull herself onto them, but without success, unless it is a really low thing like a step. When I mentioned my concerns to her pedi, I was told that babies develop at their own paces. Some babies don't crawl at all (in fact its not even one of the milestones pediatricians look for), some go strait to walking. My cousin said her pedi told her that 70% of babies don't walk until 15 months. At my LO's 12 month appointment her pedi told me that she wasn't concerned about her development so far, but if she wasn't walking or making an effort by 15 months then we might start to get concerned. But, then another mom I know said her pedi says by 18 months they should be walking, and her older 2 boys really pushed that boundary and didn't start until after 17 months, and her 3rd looks to be about the same way. In fact, her oldest was even put in physical therapy around 17 months because they were worried about him not walking, but they found that he had the capabilities, he just didn't want to do it. And that's kind of how my daughter acts too. When other random people ask me if she is walking yet I just tell them she's a lazy baby and doesn't feel like it yet.
So I wanted to say that to give you some hope that your baby might just be progressing at a slower pace then some other babies. I know how you feel though! My LO has a cousin who is 5 months younger than her and is already standing and taking steps. I've had to watch this way tiny baby doing all the things I felt like my baby should be doing first while my baby just sat there on the floor or scooted around on her back. Its hard to think that there could be something wrong with our children. But we also shouldn't judge them on the same standards as those who develop much quicker. I do hope that the evaluation finds that your little guy is just a little slower at the moving around thing than some, but even if it is something that needs to be worked on its good that they will get an early start on it. I heard that was the best way to help in those situations.
Also, on the talking thing, my pedi also told me they like to hear 2 "words"--or at least what sounds like a word and means a particular item/person-- by 12 months, 5 words by 15 months and they usually don't really start talking until 18 months.
GL to you! I will keep you in my prayers!
We'll miss you sweet Debbie Girl (4.21.12) and sweet Cindy Girl (8.9.12)

I didn't read all the responses but both my kids are in EI right now. Tims in for speech and Nicks in for not crawling yet. They will do an eval to determine eligibility. I had the same concerns about something being wrong with him, but they told me there was nothing wrong with his legs or brain he's just delayed.
As for the not babbling Nick wasn't either, and they told me it was because he was focusing more on the gross motor aspect. And because his core muscles the are responsible for speech aren't as developed yet either, but once he strengthens the other muscles he'll start working towards babbling. Nick isn't crawling yet, but he's close. but he is babbling now.
try not to worry your self too much though.
I have to keep this brief I need to run. but hang in there you did the right thing. keep us updated and PM me if you have any questions.
I was just at our pedi today for our one year visit, and we were discussing how DD does not crawl, pull up to a stand, etc. My pedi said that as long as she is showing progress each month we shouldn't be concerned. I was 18 months when I walked, so I expect around the same for DD- she simply isn't interested. She just managed to get herself into a sitting position around 3 weeks ago.
So try not to worry, it could just be that he is developing at his own pace. It is great that you are getting an eval though, hopefully it will be able to help! GL
Nick just did this about 2 weeks ago.
