Any other RH- moms out there?

If you are, are you doing rhogam or not? If so, during or after, of both?

Re: Any other RH- moms out there?

  • I am -- and I did it at around 28 weeks. It's my first pregnancy and I've not had an abortion or miscarriage before, so from what I understand it wasn't completely necessary but I decided to go with it.... For me the cons were potential side effects (which I was told were minimal) and the pro was mainly that it would just help put my mind at rest and stop me worrying about one more thing. I haven't thought about it since.

I believe that if the baby is RH+ I'll also have to have the shot again after birth.

  • I had a miscarriage at 4 weeks prior to this, so we don't know if I'm sensitized or not.

  • I did. During and after. Dh is Rh+, and after doing my research I decided the risks were almost nonexistent, and it was worth getting just to be safe. Dd ended up being Rh+ as well, so it's nice having a piece of mind that my body won't attack my next child. Had she been Rh-, I probably would have declined the post-labor shot.

  • Absolutely I did at 28w.  Ridiculous not to, IMO.

Both my boys ended up being Rh-, so I've never needed the post-delivery shot.

  • I just got the rhogam shot last week. I'll b getting another after baby's born if baby is +.

I figured the risk to NOT take the shot was greater than the risks of taking it.

  • I did, at 6 weeks for very light spotting and at 28 weeks. We were going to try to find out if DH was negative or not but we never got around to it, so I just opted for the shot.

I thought they couldn't find out until after the baby was born?Tongue Tied

  • I am and have had the shot a few times.  With my 2nd pg that resulted in a m/c I had one when I started spotting.  With my last pg, I had one but I'm not sure when--during the pg.  I would have gotten one after but DD ended up having Rh- blood also so it wasn't needed.

  • I didn't get it, but we know my SO is negative (we have the same blood type). I had to give my midwife a copy of my SO's blood donor card for liability reasons, but other than that we had no issue.

  • I absolutely got it (28 weeks); there as no reason for me not to, and my husband is RH+.  If I need it after birth I will be getting it then as well.  The only con was how incredibly expensive it was, even after insurance.

  • I've had the shot several times.  I had one with my first pregnancy when I miscarried. I had one shot at 28 weeks when pregnant with DS (2nd pregnancy) but he turned out to be o- too so I didn't need another shot after the birth. I had another shot after my 2nd miscarriage (3rd pregnancy). I will be getting another shot in a couple of weeks time (when I am 28 weeks along again - 4th pregnancy).  If this DD turns out to be + then I will get another after the birth.  As you can see, I have no problems with getting the shots - I think the benefits FAR outweigh any risks of the shot.  My understanding is that you will only get the shot after birth if the baby is + as there is no reason to give it again if they are - too.

I don't think they can find out the baby's blood type. I am AB-, but my husband doesn't know his blood type; if he was negative as well and we were aware, I would have opted out of the shot, since it is to protect moms who are negative and make a baby with someone who is positive. If I'm negative and make a baby with someone who is also negative, there is no need for Rhogam. That is my understanding, anyway.

I also think it's only given mainly to protect during second+ pregnancies I believe. If the first baby has a positive blood type and mom has negative, if their blood mixes, mom becomes sensitized to it and while it's no problem for the first baby/birth, it can cause big problems for the next. Again, my understanding, so if I got this all wrong I hope someone corrects me!

She's saying her husband never had his blood type checked.  If he was negative as well then it's not a problem.

  • Yes, I got the shot at 28 weeks and again after delivery because both of my girls are Rh+
