BLW check-in

Since we are going silent tomorrow for Baby Milo, I thought Id start this today instead.

Hits?

Misses?

Comments/Concerns/Questions?

Re: BLW check-in

  • Hits: extra baked sweet potatoe sticks (the boy LOVES them), clementine, orange, steamed apple, green beans

Misses: carrots and oatmeal (I plan on trying both again though)

Questions: is there a guide you guys use on when to introduce what? I downloaded some PDFs form wholesomebabyfood.com but obviously it doesnt like everything...am I just over thinking this?

  • On the form, we haven't started using anything yet, but  I think when we get going more seriously on introducing things (after 6 mo. appt. next week), I'll just make a copy of a page out of babies 411 that lists a bunch of foods and just cross things off/note any reactions, likes/dislikes.

My question for those who've done sweet potato: I plan to cook it in the oven like a baked potato, but wonder if I should cut it into pieces before or after I cook it? another episode of over-thinking I'm sure, but I'd appreciate knowing how others have prepped it!

  • Hits? Green Beans, Teething Biscuits, Bell Peppers, Broccoli

Misses? Everything else haha.  Bananas, pears, peaches and pineapples were too slippery to pick up.   Avocado and Sweet Potato were too mushy- they'd break when he picked them up.  He ignored everything else.

Comments/Concerns/Questions? When I say hit, I mean he actually picks them up and puts them in his mouth.  He doesn't do much beyond an occasional nibble or sucking the juice out.  Anybody have babies actually chewing on their food yet?

    Anniversary

  • Thanks for doing this!

Hits: leg of lamb (he took a 2 inch long pretty pink slice, left half hanging out of his mouth, and sucked it until it was grey), bbq pork rib (his favorite teether ever), rack of lamb (second favorite teether), cold cucumber sticks, green beans, cottage cheese, grapefruit peel, and frozen watermelon (he sucked it so flat it looked like a piece of sushi).

Misses: eggs (he is allergic to proteins in egg whites), cherries, yogurt

Comment:  at his 6 month appointment yesterday, his pediatrician said that she recommends that people not introduce egg whites, strawberries, honey, maple syrup, corn syrup, shellfish or wheat before 1 due to allergy and food safety issues.

  • Hits: homemade sweet potato fries, potato fries (both bakes on the grill w/ a spray of olive oil, but w/o salt), apple, plum, watermelon, broccoli (LOVED!!), chicken (although the pedi said to hold off on meats until 9mo, so we will probably wait).

Misses: Banana - it was fun, but she just couldn't hold onto it.

Comments:  We got the go ahead from our pedi to do all fruits and veggies so I am excited to move ahead.  DD LOVES food so this is so much fun!

    ETA:

Question:  Do you do oatmeal?  Do you use a preloaded spoon or what?  The pedi seemed very concerned that we add some grains.  I plan on giving DD toast sticks, but am not sure how else to give her grains at this point.

I didn't think he was chewing until I found an inch long piece of green bean in his diaper on morning - he must have bitten/broken it off of one of the six inch long beans I gave him.  But no, mostly he is just sucking.

  • I'm going to jump in, hope you all don't mind... we started BLW a few weeks ago and DS LOVES food! The only problem we've had so far was watermelon, he really liked it but we're definitely going to wait to try it again.  We're going pretty slowly adding things but I was wondering if/when you might add peas and if you'll mush them and just let them play with mush, preload spoon, ?  We've got peas coming in the garden and I really want to steam some up for him!  I did have to mash some avocado because he got mad he couldn't pick it up one night and he had no problem getting the spoon to his mouth by himself so I was leaning towards the preloaded spoon.
