Single Parents

Should I cancel the Childbirth class?

Hello ladies,

My BD and I are scheduled to attend a childbirth class this Saturday. Things went sour between us last night (I have been preparing to be a single parent for months now so this is no surprise) and he no longer wants to attend the class with me.

So my question is this: Should I attend the class and take mom or sister with me, or can I survive without taking the class at all? It would be an all day class.

  • I agree, if you want to go to the class take someone else with you. Also, the class would probably be beneficial to the other person if they will be in the room with you when LO is born. However, you can survive without taking the class if you don't want to go. I had to miss the class I registered for and I was just fine.

  • If you plan to have someone in the delivery room with you, I would take that person with you. If you plan to labor without a partner or that person can't go, I would still go because the information they share is helpful.

However, if you don't want to go, I don't think it would be the end of the world.

Take your mom or a friend with you and go to the class. I see no issue with going with someone other than the father of the child.

^^  This.  I'm sure there are plenty of women who take their mothers.  When I did the childbirth classes for my son, it was a week long class and the couple of days my XH (then boyfriend) had to miss for work I took my sister with me. When my friend was pregnant and doing her childbirth classes, I went with her because her husband is in the military and therefore there was a good chance he wouldn't be there for the birth.  No one thought anything of it or even commented about it.

  • I attended all three of my classes alone and while I found them EXTREMELY helpful, it was very obvious that I was the only one that didn't bring someone with me to any of them. I would suggest going with your mom or sister or friend just for the company. Plus if you forget something, they will be there to walk you through it.

  • Absolutely no question. Take the class! Here's why....not because you 'might' learn something about childbirth (even though you may ; ) But because this is your chance to meet up with other soon-to-be mom's who will be your support group when your child is born.

I'm a single mom & I took my sister to my classes. We all exchanged emails etc...so that we could keep in touch when the kids were born. I now have a tight group of 3 friends, and a not-as-tight group of about 15 moms and we all do things together/chat all the time. We share joys & concerns about our kids and they are my back-up whenever I need help or a babysitter (since I don't have a partner).

Boring classes...but the best decision I ever made when having my DD! People will surprise you. They will be supportive of you & your situation. If they're not...forget them anyways. : D
